cleaned it up

Well...I cleaned it up real good and started putting some things on it.I am still waiting on the new tires and inner tubes.
I have to say though that I got this new seatpost called the thudbuster and it is so nice to ride with some cushion.I recommend getting one of these.
Since I have cleaned the bike up it all looks to be in very good condition. There was a lot of surface rust so it looked really bad and dirty. Here is what I so far. Some more things coming.

looking good devo'

a clean bike is a happy bike.

with suspension now in 3 places the bike should ride smoooothly...

or like a pogo stick.
_________
now add some sort of rack/bag to carry stuff.

here's a couple of shots of 1a my rides

from a while back

it's a somewhat similar folder (with 16 inch wheels)

and was in your general location...

((extra points to those who can id the spot))

2 views of the bike with a nice rack...

(click/zoom for a better view)

the rack folds up WITH the bike

and the arkel tail rider bag keeps about 3 liters of gear

(so travel is not a total bust)

cheers

ah yes 60s F frame moultons.

love the old photos, thanks for sharing.

these were (and are) still popular bikes (the f frame era of moultons)

a full suspension bike that would FIT in the boot of mini cooper was an big innovation in cycling.

and many of the 60s adverts and photos featured them in fashionable settings...

with pretty girls, the latest clothing, sporty cars or hipster guys in hats.

there were/are TWO racks available for those bikes,

1 on the front and one on the rear (seen in the R hand photo)

which could carry 40-50 lbs of gear (they could be used for camping/touring) in specially designed bags.

many similarities to mr. wally's legacy trailer company.

Bag

I was looking at that same bag you have. They also have that quick disconnect rack for the seat that I really like.
This is something I will be using when I go on bike rides with the little one.
Oh and speaking of little one.She is a big girl now 2Air.No more training wheels.

Tires

Sorry but I already threw those away. Those things were beat up and worn out.I would not have recommended using them.

Update on my end; we have graduated to Raleigh Twentys Amazing little bikes that can be had for cheap, but easy to spend some money on when you go to upgrade. STILL saving for a Brompton, but may go with Bike Friday NWT when the new, soon to be released Shimano Alfine 11 speed hub comes out...love them cans!

BTW these two bikes date from around 1971 and 1973, perfect vintage to go with my Airstream.

I love old Raleigh's so so much. This is a neat thread. Never noticed it before.

Here's my camping bike:

I was working on it so had it up on the table. It looked so good I took a photo.

Nice Ride!
What is the base bike?

FWIW I love old Raleighs too, we have over a dozen of them and most are IGH (Internal Gear Hubs) I am trying to score a Raleigh Alyeska in my size this week too.

Thanks so much!! It's an old Murray frame (early 70's). I had it sand blasted then I sprayed clear coat over it. The fork is from a 60's Murray Spaceliner. The wheels and tires are new. Rear is a Sturmey Archer internal 3 speed that I adapted an old Shimano stick shifter to. I made the tank myself from some aluminum and Olympic Rivets.

I love old bikes. i'm working on a 50's JC Higgins now. I'm not going to paint it. I want to leave all the patina just clean it really well and make it function. I don't have the original wheels so I will probably get a Nexus 7 speed internal rear wheel at some point. I love internal geared hubs. Many come with a coaster brake so you don't need to run cables for brakes.

I just sold a 71 Raleigh 3 speed that I found in the weeds on the side of the road. it must have been there for a year. I got it home, cleaned it, greased it and it rode near perfectly.

I still have my Raleigh 10 speed from 1977 hanging in my garage. I plan to restore it next.

Can a guy have too many hobbies?

I have a Murray frame like that too, but I suspect mine is from the mid 80's given the crappy brazing job on it (chinese?) I have mine stripped down but haven't gotten much further. I want to build it up to look like an old board racer. I have a 2 speed Bendix kickback that I may use or if it doesn't work Sturmey Archer has a modern kick back listed on their site (may be vaporware though). I like bicycles for a variety of reasons, the best one being that they are relatively cheap to play with compared to planes or boats...and golf

Too many projects and too little time...c'mon retirement!

Sweet!

That picture of mine is only about 1/3 of the Raleigh collection. According to my bride we have 28 bicycles...but who's counting

Update

Just wanted to update on the bike.I finally finished it.
I changed out the cassette, derailleur and shifter from Sram to shimano.I hated the twist shifter.I feel I have way better control on the gears now.
Got some MKS quick disconnect pedals as the others were worn out badly.
new Marathon Racer tires by Schwalbe. They are wider than the ones I had and are great.Very smooth and very sticky on the road.
I got some new handle grips from Ergo. These things are nice and for me they are very comfortable.I like the way they have it extended for your palm to rest on while riding.Your hands dont tend to start slipping off when your hands are sweaty on that hot day.
All in all.I am happy with what I now.Just a couple more things to get like a seatpost rack and a small bag for the wallet and keys and thats it.
Hope you all like what I did to it.
