I have seen those percentages bandied about before. Curious as to where the numbers come from.

I, too, am curious at how they reached that determination.
Could they actually look at registrations in every state to determine which ones are still registered? That seems a little far fetched.
But-
I do see way more 60's and 70's Airstreams (even ones from the "Beatrice" years) in campgrounds than SOB's of the same era-
There are still a bunch of 80's and 90's SOB's in campgrounds everywhere.

That's exactly how they do it...and auto mfrs. as well. R.L. Polk is a company who does the registration pull from 50 states, does the analysis and sells the data to companies who desire it. It is how recall databases are used as well to reach 2nd, 3rd...owners as well.

And thus the claims-
Chevy- "the longest lasting, most dependable trucks on the road"
Ford- "the highest selling vehicle 31 years"

An Airstream trailer- no drive train and occasional use- should last a loooong time.

Especially if stored/used all the time under a roof in a dry climate.

Newer is Not Necessarily an Upgrade

This thread content seems to drift about, but I would comment on my couple of years in Airstreams overall. The comoradery of simply being in an Airstream has totally dominated my relationships with other Airstreamers, and even though my three have all been new, not once have I felt rejected, snubbed, avoided, etc., because I am in a new unit. Instead, I have been welcomed into the WBCCI with open arms and made to feel a part of the family.

I like all Airstreamers, and have no problem with the variety of personalities within our group. My relationships seem to be more dependent upon my attitude/reactions/ behaviors than on anything else. If I see the positive in everyone I meet, this is exactly what I get in return. Thanks for letting me share.

They say 80% of the world's statistics are made up.

Sorta - Chevy claim = RL Polk registration data
Ford claim = monthly sales data is published and warehoused by folks like Automotive News as well as mfrs.

The number of registered Model A's still on the road is a hot topic and nothing seems to resolve it. As to Airstreams, I'd like to see current registrations state by state and insurance statistics. Quite frankly, that 80% number sounds like a marketing man's idea rather then a solid statistic. I'm on way back from Kingman AZ on the old Route 66 and have seen at least three abandoned Airstreams. Do these count?

Were they abandoned on or off the roadway?

I haven't heard vintage Airstreamers denigrating those who buy new as being un-mechanical.

I have heard, and have said it myself after spending 4 years renovating a vintage rig, that those who are not handy should probably not buy vintage, at least not as a money saving move. It would end up costing more to have someone else do the required repairs and renovations than it would to buy a new unit.

If there is anyone who needs to justify the buying of a Vintage unit by putting down buyers of New as being incapable of repairs, or snobbish, well, it seems to me that sort of person has issues that couldn't be fixed by a wrench. Pay them no mind.

IMHO... anybody that buys much of anything either needs to be rich or mechanically inclined. "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"_Red Green

Sorry Jim, but this was (primarily) the post that made me comment.....

I'm not amazing at turning a wrench - but could manage the skill to whack someone over the head with one if I had to!
