I always try to refuel without the trailer attached, or if necessary pull to one side and shut the fridge down prior to the refuel. FWIW I have a diesel tow vehicle, but quite often have to fill up near the gas pumps.

Pickup camper would place it next to the filler cap on your truck. A trailer puts it to far away. WE run with our on. never a problem and well over 10,000 miles

Having been witness to a propane tank explosion on the back of a flatbed truck in a busy London street, I run with the propane, and therefore the fridge, off when travelling. I know that the risks are minimal in an Airstream but the sight of half a block without windows has had a lasting effect! A bag of ice in an already cold fridge and/or freezer has been perfectly satisfactory for us.

The gas spill was on the other side of the pumps from the pickup camper. It wasn't the camper fill up that was the problem, it was the idiot on the other side. You may be able to control your actions but it is difficult to control the actions of others using the pumps in the same area.
I drive some 60,000 miles a year for work and I see all sorts of stupidity at gas stations on a regular basis...like the guy filling up 10 milk jugs in the trunk of his car while smoking a cigarette. Needless to say I went across the street to do my fill up.

We generally keep ours off on the road, except during long trips on hot days when the fridge would get too warm otherwise. I think the odds of having a problem are extremely slim, but why add to the risks if you don't need to?

I run with mine on, but I would be concerned if the unit is involved in a collision and the gas line is damaged then you would have a fire concern.

You can always put a block of ice in the fridge and freezer. Our pop up was an ice block fridge and it lasted 3 days. you would just have to put it in something, so when it melts you don't have puddles.

I would not put a block of ice in your fridge or freezer. Unlike an ice box, there is no drain in the refer. And you know what happens to the floor in an A$ if it gets wet.

We use milk jugs full of water that have been frozen, as they thaw we have cold drinking water. Started doing that way back when were were tent camping.

Been on the road for 2 weeks now. Lit the fridge at home and will turn it off when we get home. That's what it was made for.

I wouldn't use those milk jugs too often. The plastic starts to break down and you will have 4 arms, 2 heads and that strange growth wanting to get out of your stomach.

Just buy gallon jugs of bottled water lots of places have them for $1 each or get a case of smaller bottles of water and freeze them, they fit in the fridge better.
