McKay correlation

Just curious as to whether someone could shed some light on the correlation between our beloved Airstream's and the ships that Donald McKay built. I know that PAN-AM Airlines also had one.

Donald McKay was a naval architect and shipwright in Boston who designed clipper ships in the 1800s, one of which was named "Flying Cloud", built in 1852 for the Swallow Tail Shipping Line.

Aside from (perhaps, or perhaps not) being the inspiration for the name of the Airstream Flying Cloud trailer, there is no direct correlation between Donald McKay wooden clipper ships and Wally Byam aluminum trailers. McKay died in 1880, and Wally Byam was born in 1896 so the two men never could have met.

Addendum: McKay's clipper ship "Sovereign of the Seas" may (or may not) have been the inspiration for the name of the Airstream Sovereign trailers.

I am aware of that one, but the fact that he had a model called the Flying Cloud (a McKay clipper), Sovereign of the Road (Sovereign of the Seas was another McKay clipper), and the ole Airstream "Clipper" itself is intriguing.

If not names, then not sure exactly what you are asking.

Just curious as to if it was just an admiration for those particular boats or if someone knows some other reason why the naming conventions.

They've been systematically shredding the seat upholstery even though I turned the table's pedestal into a scratching post by wrapping it with sisal rope rubbed with catnip. Someday I'll have to replace the upholstery (if I can afford it, that is) but for now I'm just covering the most-abused areas with duck tape…
