Let's Keep it Aloha
I'm noticing a lot of unkindness creeping in here - it seems to be increasing since I joined the forum three years ago. I don't know if it's a reflection of the general devolution of kindness and consideration in our culture as a whole or maybe folks are especially edgy right now with the political process underway in the U.S. or other current events. An unsettling environment right now.
I've just returned from two Oregon Unit Airstream rallies and there was consistent congeniality and good fellowship toward one another, a characteristic that I find to be consistent in the Airstream community outside of this forum. I can't count how many times my wife and I had drinks with new friends that we met just because we both had Airstreams.
Let's be as friendly to each other here as we are in person. Let's maintain a helpful environment that is even willing to answer questions that have been asked dozens of times before. Might be a good idea for the old-timers to just go ahead and skip threads they find boring. I imagine a lot of folks are reluctant to post because they're concerned that they will appear stupid. After all, we were all newbies once - I don't think anyone was born with innate knowledge of Airstreaming.
Aloha,
John

Absolutely!!!!
Play nice, think of what we're saying, don't push our views to hard, dont be unnesessarily harsh, no name calling etc.
And remember teasing online can be hit and miss sometimes.
Seems were all here because of our love for Airstreams, Argosy's, Avions and Vintage Kin.

Aloha!
Nice title and great post! Did you see any "Be Kind, You are in Oregon" stickers on your travels?
Fun hijack, I grew up (one of the many places I have progressed through my continuing growing up) in Aloha, Oregon; but it is admittedly pronounced ah-low-a with a short a at the end
I really need to try one of our local rallies and club
Cheers!
Mike

Both Kim and I have noticed the same thing, John. I'm thinking (& hoping), it's just an acculturation process with folks learning about the Airstream community and how to interact - a whole lot of new folks coming into the fold.
After a few rally's/get-togethers where you meet folks you've "talked" to on the forums, anonymity fades real quick. The great thing about this community is the wealth of knowledge we all possess collectively from repairs and how-to tricks to best places to go, hidden gems.

I agree with you John, and perhaps I am guilty. I get peeved when folks throw wild opinions around that I know are untrue. As with any public forum, we should verify things presented as facts before accepting them as true.

I agree Jacob, folks can get a bit didactic around here at times. I was trained as a biochemist and tend to be pretty empirical and I see a lot of opinion being tossed around as fact which can be irritating. So much is based on personal experience (I plead guilty) which is just anecdotal evidence. I think it's just fine to challenge folks - and there's no reason why it can't be done with diplomacy and tact. The thing I most remember my mother saying to me when she chided me was "That's unkind.".
I realize diplomacy and tact might be on back order in our culture but someone has to hold the fort and Airstreamers are great people. Why not us?
Aloha,
John

Something we hung on our awning on our last camping trip. Thought it was appropriate. I too have noticed an occasional negative tone in the posts and responses lately. Thanks for the great reminder!

Instead of aloha, I'll ask... How-aye-ye? (Hawaii?)
I hope I've never come across as mean or grumpy, but if I am, someone should tell me "that's unkind". Many people have offered solutions to my questions here and I've followed most of them. I thoroughly enjoy reading the posts, although I don't always agree with them. I always reread my post before putting it out there. I don't want to come across as pushy, crabby or boastful. This is a great forum and I hope it stays that way.

The forum is not an Airstream Disneyland.
We are just people with a particular brand of trailer. People cannot be legislated into behaving a certain way. That would be boring and unrealistic.
When I was a newbie, someone called me "anal" because I treated the FaN like a delicate piece of glass. I believe the mods removed that comment. I was not offended. Rather, it caused me to analyze my behaviour. I came to the conclusion that their assessment was correct.
