You know what? I think that many of the world's troubles can be at least tempered by showing respect and appreciation for whomever you encounter on a moment to moment basis. An active approach to kindness can work wonders. Why not start it here?

Fan nobody is legislating behaviour just saying be nice.

There's has been a lot of snarkiness lately

And you are nice, and funny.

There are a lot of differing personalities in the community here, and those personalities come out in any who post regularly.

We also individually sometimes have snarky moments, hitting submit while annoyed at something or someone.

If you come across a particularly ugly and out of line post, use the report button to bring it to the attention of the site team so that it can be looked at and perhaps be removed.

We try to monitor posts, but sometimes things get missed, so using the report button is helpful.

That said, I think there is a great deal of kindness, compassion and help available here, which most of us appreciate immensely.

Totally agree. As far as I'm concerned people are free to act in any way that they choose. I choose to encourage people to be nice to one another.

Hi Hittenstiehl, perhaps "legislate" was the wrong word. But when I read a jagged reply, I wonder how that person is really doing. The world is in the midst of much angst; perhaps that person is scared, isolated, lonely, and angry.

I appreciate the gist of the OP's message, and the forum's rules. But, a thread rap on the knuckles with a "be nice" admonition is somewhat dismissive and invalidating. The person who it is directed at may feel more isolated than ever. S/he could then direct those negative feelings into something which could really be destructive, individually and collectively. Would that really make the world a better place?

A behind-the-scenes "hey! how are you doing?" private message might work wonders.

Yes. You cannot control how other people behave. You can only control your response to it.

Aloha.

Not intending to offend anyone nor open a can of worms, but with this forum since Day One I have observed a distinction based on geography. The phrase "southern hospitality" doesn't come close to describing the extent of the cultural overprint that compels Texans to be polite. I am originally from the north and I've always been aware of this; just yesterday I was wondering how many times I say "thank you" (or "thank y'all") in the run of a day here... sometimes it's 20 times a day. People exercise politeness in my area to a fault (although they are just as quick to bite back if they are infringed upon).

When I see a snarky Air Forums comment, my eyes go straight to the ID tile to see where the poster is from. If it's a northern location, I often let it slide, concluding that people from certain areas have different ways of saying things that they themselves may not even realize appear snarky to others.

So Texans are nicer than us from Ohio?

Is that what you are saying?

(see what I'm doing here? Ha!)

Thanks,

I do believe we Nawthun'ers are more straightforward with our words and manner of speech.

Also, some of us honed clear, concise and no question about what you are saying speech as a work skill...and it stays with you.

Me, I like clarity. . I also like polite and kind, but clarity is what I like best, if it is one or the other.

Some intend to be unkind, and/or to provoke others, but it is certainly not the common denominator here, in my opinion.

When I was a newbie, someone called me "anal" because I treated the FaN like a delicate piece of glass. I believe the mods removed that comment. I was not offended. Rather, it caused me to analyze my behaviour. I came to the conclusion that their assessment was correct.
Really agree with this. This forum is an example of social media that our population has flocked to. Be nice, turn the other cheek, and when you have trouble with a particular post or poster simply move on to the next one. Well, that is how the world should be but I have a lot of trouble with cases of blatant opinion that are basically untrue.

So, the conflict within me is to either ignore the statement or add my opinion. To ignore it you actually are agreeing with it. The true skill is to confront the problem but to do it in a "nice" way. Our country seems to have lost the idea that you can disagree with someone and still remain friends. What we have observed here is a microcosm of our society in general.

If you want to see confrontation, spend some time on the "other" forum specifically read the tow vehicle sub forum. Wowza, make sure you have your flame retardant jacket on.

I have to disagree with that statement. "Ignore" is not the same as "agree." Ignoring a comment is just a matter of choosing which battles not to fight. As the saying goes, "You can't get upset if you don't care."

Of course, actually chiming in undermines my position on that, because apparently I do care enough to respond to your comment. If I really practiced what I preached, I'd not be posting this.

Uh... huh?

I think you're engineering a complex answer to a simple problem, but I totally agree with you, I think, rather than remaining silent myself.

I like hanging around here. The mix fits my personality. I'm not going to try to be artificially nice, nor am I going to try to unnecessarily antagonize anyone. As long as that works for me, you'll see me around here; I'm sure that if it doesn't work for you, you'll let me know.

Quite frankly, I'm not seeing a lot of negative comments directed at posters per se. There are a lot of negative comments directed toward Airstream/Thor regarding QC that, in my opinion, are deserved. I admit to calling a couple of posters "Airstream cheerleaders" and if that's all it takes to ruffle some feathers, so be it.

That's what their talking about, I believe. Lots of thin skinned people on here. We need to be nice, but we shouldn't have to be pc and unopinionated either.. We pretty much all get along, some of us just get carried away.

A couple of thoughts. We don't give or get a lot of feedback in our everyday world. Interestingly, most of us are not psychologically equipped to receive feedback in a ratio much less than 80/20 (80 percent positive for 20 percent negative). For those below around 20 years of age, it needs to be 95/5. Full ego strength isn't achieved for most people until around 21. And, no, my parents did NOT practice that ratio. For feedback to be fully accepted by most people it needs to be: 1) totally honest, and 2) totally kind. And, it should be devoid of judgment by the person giving it. Sharing an impression or how someone makes you feel is one thing, but adding causality is outside your purview unless you are a clinician. Just remember: Totally Honest, Totally Kind. Oh, and by the way, sometimes the feedback we give others says more about ourselves than the person to whom we're giving feedback. And, yes, I've been in the field of executive development for about 30 years.

Most anyone who has worked for a living would disagree with the 80/20 ratio. Doesn't happen, and doesn't promote productivity. This leads to a very satisfied yet unproductive work force. No initiative to improve if everything is hunky dory. My opinion from 45 years of working at numerous jobs.
