Mahalo, John & Vicky, and aloha to you all!

Civil discourse, respect and an interest in the goals and personalities of those with whom we interact with is one of the best ways to make life the best it can be.

Doesn't "mahalo" mean "push"? I've been to Hawaii a few times and I see it on many of the garbage bins....

"Mahalo" is a Hawaiian word meaning thanks, gratitude, admiration, praise, esteem, regards, or respects. According to the Pukui and Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary, it is derived from the Proto-Polynesian masalo.

Some sources support that the meanings "thanks" and "gratitude" were appended to the word following contact with Westerners. While the word mahalo is found in Lorrin Andrews' 1865 dictionary, the English-Hawaiian section does not provide any Hawaiian word intended to mean gratitude or thanks. Also, early visitors noted that the Hawaiians were generous and grateful people, but had no word to express gratitude or to say "thank you".

*They also had no words for "me" or "mine" befor contact with Westerners.

Look up Pau Hana (my favorite time of day). And Puhi Pau. Favorite time of anytime for some folks in a laid back lifestyle. Just sayin'

Bawhahaha! Best post of the week!

Since we are talking of things Hawaiian, and pupus and all, I have a historical story for you.

The famous early explorer George Vancouver visited the islands repetedly.
Having told the natives on his first visit that he would bring them great animals called cows for livestock.
On his return trip all of the cows died enroute, leaving only goats to be delivered. Somehow those goats came to be called cows by the Hawaiians and still are.
Later when cows did arrive, and the name was allready taken, cows came to be called pipi.
Not sure why, but cows are called pipi in Hawaii to this time.

So if you are visiting the islands and a host proudly brings you some beef ordurves, try not to be offended when they offer you some pipi pupus.

Aloha is a great state of mind to try to live and to share, it's all about love and kindness.

Cheers Richard

I need malasadas with my coffee. Then I'd feel the Aloha.
