This is probably why SOB dealers don't want to "work" on them! If someone sees them on the lot they may not look at the SOB( Some Other Brand) of course...

I suppose if you want large space that comes with slide outs, SOB is your only choice. A lot of people don't consider Airstreams a good bang for your buck and don't care it won't last 30 years or more.

Investigating: why an Airstream?

Investigating? The only reason to own an Airstream is because you want to own one.

In 99% +of cases, buying any RV is not a rational decision, any attempts at rationalizing such a purchase is indicative of delusion.

I was watching a television show on tricked out trains and realized some of the same features of the old streamliners, particularly the California Zepher, have a flavor like an Airstream. There is a certain panache which seems shared. And in travel, while sleeping if the wind is blowing the Airstream will rock like a train.

Of course, I may just be dreaming....LOL

There was a time when America had a classy style. What we have left.... Is a mere shadow of a marvelous culture.

I remember my mother in hose, suit and hat with white gloves being properly dressed for an airline trip. My father was in a suit.

What a negative change to today's travel attire.

I'm a second generation Airstream owner. My parents owned Airstreams since 1958 and when they could no longer travel my wife and I bought their 1992 Classic. So in some ways it's in my DNA and I couldn't imagine owning another brand.

Danielle and I also own a Jeep CJ-7. If we owned a motorcycle it would probably be a Harley-Davidson. There are just some things in life that can't be replicated by other brands.

I cannot imagine hauling anything with; "VENGEANCE" or "INTIMIDATOR" or "VOLTAGE" on it. Like the guy in a campground in Phoenix said to me last year, "that sure is a purty unit you got there....how many slides you got?" I said, "NONE" -- this trailer is for TRAVEL, not for parking at the lake for the summer. I said it nicely...

Those are all names of toy haulers. Why they gotta sound so violent?
PanAmerica doesn't sound so mean...

I'll throw in my $.02.
For full timing, if you desire space, get a fifth wheel. You'll have the tow vehicle to take to the store, and if one or the other needs service, you won't be stranded. I have (currently) a 40' motorhome class A. Love it for travel and convenience. Diesel pusher, plenty of power. Nice interior. Drives like a dream, quiet. But before long, the $600 oil changes get old, and you change every 5000 miles. My air filter was $275, and every dealer tries to rip you off. (my experience).
Also when it needs service, you can't exactly drop it off if you're traveling.
I decided it's too big for me at this time in my life, and the only trailer I want is an Airstream. Are they practical? Couldn't say. Almost no storage, super expensive, but charming.
I too am soaking up the knowledge here, keeping in mind these folks are biased. (In a good way)

You said more in two sentences than most in two paragraphs, and you summed it up nicely.

Right-- my favourite (not) name is "COUGAR." Apparently the manufacturers weren't thinking of this slang name for older women in full war paint who try to pick up young guys in bars.

Did I hear "Cougar"? LOL. On another forum my "nickname" used to be "Big Gun Cougar" possibly related to the large camera lens I carried around. (400 mm f/2.8)

As to the OP query I have just finished up several mods in my new Serenity, including addition of an "Espresso Table", automatic lights in several cabinets in the bedroom, adding shelves to the galley storage, adding a slide out tray under the sink, changing the bedroom television height and adding external speakers, and replacing the built in Clarion speakers with Polk Audio.

In an SOB, I would have had less desire to do this, but I plan on keeping this Airstream for a long while and the "personalization" adds to the overall pleasure when traveling. I mean, after all, how many custom "Espresso Bars" do we see in AS? LOL
