Go to the state website to see what is available by date, i.e:

http://tpwd.texas.gov/calendar/fairs-festivals-and-food

Lots of choices! Of course, this method calls for work! But checking things out before departing sure opens up some surprises!!! jd

Thanks for the question and many great suggestions in response. We are on the Oregon Coast this week and recently enjoyed a delicious, and interesting, tour of the Tillamook Cheese factory on US 101 in Tillamook, OR. Delicious cheese and fantastic ice cream. Easy RV parking.

For my wife, Thrift Stores. She has great style, and has not paid retail in years...

Things to do

Don't forget all the railroad rides. Adirondack Railroad, Smokey Mountains, Durango Silverton, etc. and countless RR Museums.

White water, either to watch those fools, or be one of them! Rock and mineral museums and/or shops are fun for those who like that sort of thing. Local cuisine.
Local weird stuff, like Car Henge in western Nebraska.

Quilt stores, Concours D'elegance. hot rod cruises, (diners, drive-ins & dives), Mexican, barbeque, seafood, grill your own steak houses, fly fishing shops, sailing opportunities, quilt stores, fabric stores, sewing machine stores, antique stores with quilts, and then there are the quilt stores. Oh, and ideas on where to go next.

Travel safe. Pat

My 10 year old son is interested in gold panning and gem stones.

So that is one thing we are looking for.

A place to trout fish. But I might stay a couple of days instead of 2 hours if it is interesting.

A place that sells burl wood or other interesting wood. An interesting craft store. A big Ace hardware (I usually have something broken on the trailer). A muzzlerloader shop. A farmers market. Any where that sells Buffalo burgers.

I buy a fishing license in most of the states that we travel that have decent fishing. Now you can often find a spot and get the license on line.

Bike trails that are created from old railroad routes.

Places to volunteer - Animal shelters (or other non-profits of interest), rebuilding, beach clean ups, etc.
