Ideas to organize closets...help!
Hi everyone, after a year of owning our little 16 ft, I'm ready to get serious about building a closet organizer. Tired of trying to stack bins! Our closet is REALLY small and I want to put in a shelving system of some kind.
Any suggestions or pictures would be great!
-Looking forward to see what everyone else had done

Good post, the plastic stacking draws I use are tacky and flimsy, but they work until something else comes around.

I used the metal mesh Elfa bins in mine, on sliders. Don't know if you have enough space to do that in yours, but the bins do come in quite a few sizes. Pics in my thread, somewhere towards the end, and also search for Air19's thread as he used a bunch of the same bins in his.
cheers,
steve
BTW, nice blog!!

I picked up a hanging closet organizer at IKEA that has about 8 slots that hold soft sided "drawers". Going from memory each drawer is about 12" x 12" x 3". It allows for a little room on the side to hang a couple of shirts and jackets and allows for storage underneath. So far the best solution I've tried.

We have been using the ikea soft hanging storage. However we have the narrower , shoe sized one. We've had good success with it so far. The clothes that don't fit in the storage above the bed, gets rolled and put in the slots. They are really good because the solar table light ( also ikea) and small clip fan fits in for traveling and non- trip storage. I like that they sag. It keeps everything in the sections because nothing slips out/off like a hard shelf.
The dead space behind it is perfect for both of our back packs! And there's still space to the left for about 4/5 hangers.
We stack some old Tupperware modular pieces on the closet front bottom space.
Another note. We bought a small over the door hook for temporary yowl drying after showering. Then the towel goes back on the bathroom.
Not ready to do any drilling into walls yet.
Btw check threads on a search for organization here. I know I saw a pic if someone who built shelves after making templates.
Next time I'm at the AS I'll take pictures
Really should have a section on 16' here, don't you agree??? I suggested it to customer service!

In my Bambi 19 I added wire shelves from Home Depot. They are easy to cut to form to fit the odd shapes and around the vent pipe. You have to mount L shaped brackets to the closet walls, but you can attach the shelves to the brackets with plastic ties. Then you can easily remove if necessary. Holds twice as much as the hanging cloth closet bag, and allows air to circulate.

Shelves are going in today! Working in that tight area is going to be a challenge - It's such a narrow space. It's deep though, and having shelving going all the way back will make the most of the space I hope.
I also ordered an organizer for the inside of the door. We only have about 9" to work with, so a standard organizer is too big. Paid a lot for this, but it looks really well made and the pockets are very deep.
You can see it here: L.A. RESCUE Locker Organizer | Emergency Medical Products
I'll put photos up soon!

Mojo and Valmog:
Two questions.
1. How easy is it to attach the brackets to the walls? self tapping wood screws I assume?
2. What did you use to cut the shelving with?
We are looking at getting better organization in double closet in our 23 and this looks like it might be doable, will have to see what the widest span is and how this will work given that the double closet has a single wood strip running up the center of the door openings.
To others out there, has anyone done something similar in the double closet?
thanks
Dana

1. yes. make sure they are the right length so they don't poke through the facing on an exposed wall.
2. dremel cutting tool, hacksaw, jig saw,... whatever has a metal cutting blade.
The width is not an issue, it's the depth.

Mojo, thanks for the inspiration! Your photo helped us (my husband) figure out a good shelving system and wow what a difference. We were wasting so much space trying to stack bins...and every single little inch counts in our tiny 16' footer! It was a challenge because our closet is so small it's really difficult to get in there to work.
We got the wire shelving at Home Depot along with a few other organizational items.
Thanks again!
Dana, Todd used a bolt cutter to snap the wires on the shelves.

Hi Meredith...if it's the little red stackables you're talking about...they're great! They snap together tightly and they don't move

thanks,
I'm going to go check them out next time I'm in town. I need some of those for the kitchen and bathroom. I bought some clear boxes with snapping lids from Ikea and I put labels on them for my boys. They each have their own in the bathroom with tooth brushes and contact solution in them. Now they can't argue and fight as where their own stuff is.
But my husband and I need a little more shelving.

Autumn,
I use these velcro wall hangers by 3m. You can get them everywhere. We've traveled down a lot of bumpy roads and nothing has ever come off the walls. They also are easy remove and don't leave any marks

We have an over the door shoe organizer on the inside door of the closet. The individual pockets are great for organizing small items like brushes, hair spray, hair dyer etc. the PO also installed a full length mirror to the font of same door. Hubby installed lots of fancy robe hooks everywhere on sets of three. Then we attached two small glass shelves on the closet wall next to the bed for reading glasses, watch, iPad,etc.

Mary, wish we had room to put up glass shelves near the bed...next thing I am going to figure out how to do!
For my 16 ft friends...here is the closet organizer I ordered. Fits nicely but hardware got in the way so had to cut it in half!
Every little bit of extra storage counts
