Have you been in an AS during a earthquake?

Hello,

I was in the AS during today's 5.8 today, it felt as if the trailer was going up and down, not sideways. It was a shock since NC has few if any quakes.
The jacks were not down.

No damage, that was a feeling I do not want to experience again.

I bet our West Coast friends are just grinning.

Guess you don't need new axles. Sounds like they absorbed it just fine. No popped rivets?

Sweeeeeet...otherwise you'd not only have popped rivets, but rear end sag, waterleaks, walls separated, drawers opening.....etc....during an earthquake. Must have been a Boy Scout, as you were prepared.

Seriously, I guess I can joke around, as so far there are no reports of injury or significant damage. Hope it stays that way.

Don't know how it read on the scale where you were, but in Charlotte, it was a very gentle, long rolling quake. I grew up in California, so this was more surprising than scary - you just don't expect quakes here. The guy I was in the room with is from Long Island and he asked me if we needed to run.

I've had that sensation too, but I think the cause was too much wine and forgetting to extend the stabilizing jacks...

Glad no significant injuries reported in U.S. or Canada!

We were just outside our Interstate during the earthquake today. We had driven through DC earlier, and were really glad we were not on an overpass or underpass during that experience.

We had just settled into a very nice county campground south of Alexandria, VA, were sitting outside looking at the maps and pondering the next couple of days. First our chairs were shaking as if someone had hold of them. Then, the Interstate began rocking back and forth---pretty wild to see and feel.

By the time we realized what it was, it was over. Yikes!!

On to Mt. Vernon tomorrow.

Awesome, Mt. Vernon and Monticello are two of my favorite historical sites. If you find a quiet spot you can almost hear all the visiting Statesmen discussing a "difficult birth". They are awesome places, full of everything great and everything so wrong all at the same time!

Wouldn't you have loved to be a fly on the wall?

It would take quite a bit of shaking to damage a vehicle or trailer... for all the damage an earthquake can cause, yoy're actually dealing with some fairly slow movement of the earth. Your trailer easily absorbs that energy, and converts it into bouncing (the springs).

Old structures that can't absorb or convert the energy in swaying are the dangers... as long as nothing falls on your trailer, it would be one of the safest places to be.

Old structures like vintage Airstreams? Really, it was a (not too good) reference to how "vibrations" are unkind to Airstreams due to out of balance running gear and worn out axles.

Oh My God! I was in my AS this afternoon in Silver Spring, Maryland! I was in pulling out bulbs to take and compare to LED's when it started rocking.... I thought someone was outside playing around.... then I realized I was alone and got a strange feeling in the pit of my stomach. Suddenly, I felt pretty helpless.....

Yes, its a weird sensation!
I was outside leaning against my Jeep when the roller M7.2 hit 100 miles south of us in Mexico last year... and I too thought someone was messing with me... Heard the Jeeps transmission click-click-click-click as it rolled forward and back against the Parking pawl...
I would rather be in a trailer or motorhome out in the open when the big one happens... and if I am not, I will be there soon after... its our emergency plan!

Almost

We dry camped at a marina in Rock Hall MD last night. Went out on a friends boat to Annapolis. Finished our lunch of 2 doz #1's and were back on the water in the no wake zone. When we felt the vibration, we thought that maybe we scraped bottom. Looked off the side and, strangely, saw a large bubble surface (swamp gas?) I said, hey maybe we hit a gas line. 20 minutes later, saw the news on my iphone at sea. Interesting day.

I would rather have been in my Argosy. However I was in a large enclosed room without windows in a 1 story office building directly under a landing path at Dulles International Airport. I got in a quick Hail Mary before realizing that there weren't going to be any jet engine parts coming through the walls/ceiling.

Lots of damage showing up on the news this morning. Old structures with pretty heavy damage, grocery stores with products fallen off the shelves, etc.---and the National Monument is cracked!!

There was also a quake expert talking about the earth's "crust" on the east coast which moves in one piece, making these quakes much different than those on the west.

dznf0g, we are going to move inland tomorrow and peruse the Monticello area, out of the acute reach of Irene heading this way. Looking forward to it. Then back toward the shore to see the James River plantations, Jamestown, etc.

I was on the fourth floor of a building during the quake, near DC. From what I heard it was nowhere near as bad on the first floor. Several people's computers fell over, pictures, etc., fell over, that sort of thing. I saw light posts on the top of the parking deck swaying back and forth like an antenna on a car. No damage or injuries here though.

I didn't even bother to check the Airstreams - I assume that driving on DC area or Pennsylvania roads is pretty much like repeated earthquakes, and they deal with those just fine. Like someone else said, I was more worried about trees/branches falling ON the Airstream.

I was worried about the Franklin Mint Airstream model we have, though, since it's not ours. It didn't come with wheel chocks! Fortunately it was fine, still on its shelf.
