Have I made a mistake
Hello Fellow Airstream Junkies
I just purchased my first airstream, a 20ft Argosy 26, 1978. I have salivated, stalked and porned over airstreams for years, I wanted a Bambi, but I think I need to start a little broader. So I went to take a look, it was love at first site. The girls and I spent the ride home home naming her, I wanted Maxine, they wanted Peanut or ***** Wagon, so she is named Peanut, Maxine is still is contention when we make her pretty.
OMG, what have I done!!!!!! I am a crazy. Ok, I did reverse it it into the hardest spot on earth, perfectly, with 5 guys watching and critiquing, feel like I have just entered a world that I am ill prepared for. First thing I had to do is email an airstream whisperer, driving 60 miles, attached to a fading beauty with no electrics or safety chains was enough to give me the heebee geebees. That and this horrendous Houston traffic, I need therapy. Just had the mental picture of the entire top being deposited on the I45, and all I am towing is wheels.
Someone out there must think I am sane?
Joie

Joie,
Fortunately for all of us on this forum, sanity is not a criterion (at least a very important one) for owning or pining for an Airstream. There will be many psychological ups and downs (euphoria, anxiety, denial and so on through the cycle...which will repeat). However, that being said, I'd like to extend a hearty welcome to the group of owners represented here. Most folks will be helpful and sympathetic to your present circumstances!
All my best,
Steve

Welcome Joie to the forums:
That overwhelming feeling you have will subside as you get to know her better and fix certain critical things, like say electrics or a really well setup hitch.
Just remember it's one thing to take it to a shop and have the work done, (expensive) and another to delve into her and fix her yourself. By doing the work yourself, with even guidance from someone who knows will give you strength through knowledge to fix anything that happens on the road.
You really need to read this thread from start to end to understand your Argosy and its potential. PM SmokelessJoe (Sergei) if you need to ask questions.

Good luck with the Argosy
Cheers
Tony

Not at all!
Crazy is NOT showing your girls that you can jump at the chance to do something exciting and challenging just because you don't yet know all the steps to do it. What you have done is great.
( But another kind of Crazy is NOT asking for help when you need it, so just don't be that kind of Crazy. We all (and youtube) love to help.)

Congratulations! Argosy trailers are great. If I'm not mistaken, you may have a trailer with aluminum sub-floor, which means you don't have to worry about one of the biggest issues Airstream owners worry about: floor rot. I really hope Airstream revives the Argosy line of trailers. They are great.

The Argosy's are really cool. If you ever make it up to Amarillo from H-town definitely go by the RV Museum there. They have an original Argosy on display in case you need to see the way the originals were laid out and the materials they used. Whether you are crazy or not is really your personal insight - the forum members (most of us) are not here to judge, more to listen and support ...

Welcome to the forums and the lifestyle! Argosy trailers are awesome and once you make all of the systems dependable will provide many happy trips. Have had mine for 16 years and have yet to find another that I would trade for. Happy camping!

Speak for yourself,
Yes he is crazy !
But then one has to be crazy at times to get the most out of life.
In my 73 years the scariest and craziest deeds gave me to most thrill and self awareness.

When I decided to build an airplane in my garage, they said I was crazy. But, I built it and it flies great.
When I bought a sad 1971 Airstream Sovereign, they said I was crazy. But, I restored it and my wife and I are now full-timing in it.
Just remember the theory on how a mouse can eat an elephant...one bite at a time.
Now, driving on I-45 in Houston...that's just plain crazy.

The Craigslist advert that caught me
Hey Fellow Airstream Junkies
Attaching the original ad, it does not show the smell, or the rust, of the caved in pieces. Many panels need replacing, due to some previous owner drilling holes in her. The inside is mostly gutted, and I am not sure what happened, but the floor is rotten wood and will need to be replace.
What I do love, I think she has tin can potential, where paint is scraped off, its tin can colored. She is a bit of a clean slate inside, so I can do what I want. When I was a child my Mother stole us and we were hidden in a Caravan in a tiny town for a year before I was able to call our Dad. I loved caravan living, but not so much with no air conditioning, a chain smoking, drinking, schizophrenic manic Mother and 3 hungry, terrified and amazing little sisters.
Peanut is going modern, planning solar panels to get her off grid. Putting in a Japanese Copper sit tub, planning some serious pimpage. Its a long way off that.
I probably need to take her to a shop initially, I think the top half needs to be removed to get the trailer sorted out.

Have a great day everyone

Welcome joie, you've come to the right place. There are plenty of people here who can answer your questions about repairing your Argosy.
The Argosy trailer utilized several features to make it less expensive than traditional Airstreams. One such feature is the steel (?) end caps - the stamped, curved upper section on each end of the trailer.
I've seen an Argosy or two with polished aluminum areas and painted end caps. I saw one recently with polished lower panels and the end caps and everything along that line were painted - sort of a two-tone effect.
Yes, you have lots of things to do but you'll make it your own and it will be a gratifying experience if you see it through.
All of us on Air Forums a crazy in some manner - some noticeably more crazy than others!
See Ya Down the Road.
