has anyone ever built a airstream style guest house or room

Meaning not using a airstream as a guest house but building a small permanent structure designed and functional similar to a airstream or trailer.

We are losing our guest room and home office with the birth of are second child and are considering adding on a small guest house off the patio. If we designed it to be all in one suite for guests like a airstream with kitchen, bathroom and sitting area it would be perfect.

Do you know of any time home structures like this that copy that airstream model? Any arc plans out there?

Thanks

Hi Coastal,

Have you thought of just using an Airstream that has been retrofited for this reason? This has become a popular thing with some folks that I work with... It helps with getting around the zoning and such.

A unit that needs restoration can have enything in it that a cottage has, including radiant heated floors...

Just wondering...

RJ

when we had the AS parked in the driveway, with hookups, guests loved staying in it.. the novelty... plus it's private!!!

There are many options for this. What I have seen mostly is pipes coming up thru the ground under the trailer as they would if it was a building. Septic, water, electric, other services...

You'll need to check with what local zoning ordinances allow before putting too much thought into it. Many municipalities don't allow trailers to be used as accessory buildings (which is what a guest house is). It may be easier to get approvals for an addition to your house or a stick built guest house.

On the other hand, if you take the wheels off, and support it on blocks under the frame, and put a skirt around the edges to cover the gap underneath, how is that different from a mobile home or modular building with regard to zoning? Except of course that it's much more stylish…

I'm an Architect and although an Airstream is stylish, I'm not sure I'd want one as a full time guest house. I'd rather built something that is going to be site-specific, good looking and energy efficient. Maybe something in a modern style to suite the mid-century style of the trailer.
