Guns
We re debating purchasing a tactical shotgun to keep in our camper for protection. I am curious to how many campers travel with a gun or have other security methods.

I think you would be surprised at how many RVers carry firearms. Besides knowing how to use a gun safely, be aware of the state laws you travel to or are in. A free app called "Legal Heat" can be downloaded to your smart phone for all that info.

The Judge
Good stopping power and very little collateral damage with shotgun shells.
Fun to shoot skeet with too!

Beretta 92 and Remington Mariner 12 gauge. Both silver to match the Airstream.

Most of the Airstream interiors would be challenged to stop a .22 cal projectile. So a shoot out at the OK Camp Ground could have lots of collateral damage.
Planning ahead and some street sense where parking are likely to more effective at keeping me and mine safe.

First 3 out of my pistol are frangible, next two are fmj, and the last 3 are hollow point. My spare mags are all loaded strictly with hollow point. While I've never shot sheet aluminum with the frangible ammo, I know that the frangible ammo doesn't pentatrate a 2x4. I would imagine that it would pentatrate the first skin of our trailers and leave a hell of a dent on the second skin. Next time I go out shooting I'll carry some allclad and do a little testing.

As Mrjkq says, you'd be surprised. Truth be told, likely more have some form of protection than not. You might want to consider how easy it is to handle a shotgun inside the confines of a trailer. While we carry shotguns too, they are mostly for Trap & Skeet; handguns are for protection.
As switz says situational awareness is your best bet, in life and on the road.

Let's see now.... Get on the Internet where you have an easy-to-discover-identity and locale... and announce to the WWW what items are gonna be in the trailer....
....yeah, ...that's the ticket...
Make sure you have a NRA sticker in your back window also. That way no one will know how you feel about having whateveritis in the car.
As a former cop told me, "The most-ready-to-draw (a weapon) I ever was .... was when approaching the obvious gun-toter who bragged about it with bumper stickers and NRA decals in the window..."

The close quarters of an Airstream could make even a short tactical shotgun difficult to swing.

I found that logistically it is nearly impossible to travel through some states legally with a firearm unless you are a resident of that state and licensed to carry there. So instead of violating the carry law I just opted to pack a man-portable recoilless antitank rocket launcher weapon.

What is your firearms background?
Do you normally concealed carry?
Do you own a firearm currently?
What kind of training have you had?
Do you shoot competitively?
I ask because these are all things worth thinking about before making a firearm selection.
If you are thinking possessing a firearm is some sort of magical talisman that will "protect you", or that the sound of racking a slide will "scare them off", you need to think again.
A firearm is a lethal instrument that you need to be ready, willing and able to use when defending life or protecting grave bodily harm.
If you are not ready to do that, there are better options out there to reduce risk, including:
o Diet and exercise to increase your own personal fitness
o Classes in situational awareness in order to be more observant
o Learning how to avoid getting into bad situations or locations in the first place
o Becoming familiar with less-than-lethal options (Pepper / OC spray (not wasp spray!!) or other self defense techniques (BJJ)
o Lastly owning and carrying a firearm.
My own opinion is that a shotgun in the short confines of an RV is probably not a terrific idea.
You still need to aim (yes, aim) given typical pellet dispersion and for that you need to align the sights (yes, the sights). While satisfyingly effective, the low round count may not be ideal in today's more numerous violent criminal actor encounters (2 or more assailants).
A reliable (as in, works every time), effective (as in, 9mm or .38 special, at least) capable (meaning, at least a compact or full size duty pistol or revolver) THAT YOU REGULARLY TRAIN WITH is a much better bet for traveling on the road.
Not, of course, that *I* might or might not carry a firearm.

You don't have to reload a Kukri.....just saying....and no one would ever challenge your assertion that you acted in self defense as most likely you will have just incapacitated the assailant; not painted the interior of your AS with him, (or her).
The biggest worry I'd have would be getting up and my wife deciding I was the baddy.....not that my wife can shoot.....but in an AS you don't have a lot of places to duck into.
Love the tank tow vehicle, but imagine that tearing up the playfield at your local KOA would be frowned on. I'll take a FV107 Scimitar with the Jaguar engine.....in black.
Cheers
Tony

As said above advertising a weapon either with a bumper sticker or macho attitude is in my mind a new kind of stupid. I'm a legally armed citizen ( when I want to be ) but nobody knows when I want to be!
