great addition to Weber Q grill
I thought I would pass along how much we are using and enjoying the cast iron grill we got for our Baby Q. It replaces one of the grates, and makes the grill so versatile. We love grilled asparagus, but fixed some on the grill side and cannot tell you how great it turned out. We love breakfast fixed on it, and really just about everything. It's like Weber was reading our minds.

Yes, we use it too on our Q1200. Grilled onions, peppers, bacon for the burger or steak, asparagus, cabbage, potatoes for a side dish, sausage and eggs for breakfast.
Wish it was bigger sometimes, they say you can only use one on one side, grill grate on the other.

I have been looking at one of these for my Weber Q to be able to make bacon outside. My concern is that it looks like it has holes in the corners that would allow the grease to drain right into the main body of the grill.
Anyone have trouble with flare-ups when the grease hits the open flame area?

On your recommendation, I went out and bought one this morning. I was lucky to find one at an area Ace hardware. Looks nice, I will try it this weekend at the Penn wood Airstream rally.

Another alternative is to use a good solid cast iron fry pan right on the original grill surface. The same pan can be used over a campfire grill setup also, obviously, and is nearly indestructible. Handy as the serving dish, as well, by using a potholder or trivet to protect the table.
Once you remove the pan from the grill, you still have the use of the full grill back.
There is a great thread here for cast iron cooking BTW:

which appears in the also great Stella's Kitchen sub-forum:

Happy Trails!

Bacon
I precook thick sliced bacon on a heavy duty aluminum "pan" on the Weber 1200. Once most of the fat has rendered off, slide the " pan" off the grill onto a cookie sheet or cutting board, then using tongs, place each slice of bacon back on the grill for a minute or two on each sides. No drips or flare ups and makes amazing bacon!

I do the easy way and buy precooked bacon at Sams or Costco and throw it in the microwave for 30 to 40 seconds and no mess other than a paper plate.

We already had a cast iron griddle pan that we use right on top of the grills. My original plan was to buy the Weber one, but this one gives some more cook surface while still leaving enough space around for good air intake. Happy grilling!
