GoPro cam on my roof

I'd like to put a GoPro on my roof and remote operate it from in the truck via Bluetooth.

Anyone ever do something like that?

Hi Ted;

I cannot say i've actually mounted it on my roof. but I've put it a lot of other places and controlled it from my iPhone. As long as you have the suction cup mount you should be good to go.

Make sure you test your communication between the camera and your phone before you head down the road and have fun....

+1, the suction cup mount is great...I've used it down the track at well over 100mph without it budging. Depending on your intentions, the battery life will be the limiting factor if you don't have it tethered with power.

I'm curious if there is a power mount that I can rotate, I do not own a GoPro but my wife is doing a Zombie Run tomorrow so we might buy a Hero 4. I figure it would be cool to capture some shots on our trip next year because if I got no pictures it ain't true!

GoPro on my roof

This is the coolest accessory for the GoPro (or DSLR) I've seen in awhile, it has amazing possibilities...no power required.

The suction cup mount is very dependable especially if mounted on a non-flexing area.

You can use a battery bac pac, and I believe 12 hour external battery pacs are available to the public. WiFi can run batteries down rather quickly.

Hi,

I haven't used it on an AS but regularly remote control GoPro HEROs on the roof, inside, front etc of race cars. I have no experience with the new BT based remote control (HERO4), but with WiFi based RCs only. The BT option is new for the HERO4 series, all older HEROs used WiFi.

BT is more limited in RCing distance possible (compared to WiFi), so independent of the controlling device, you need to check the ON/OFF/record cycle feasibility. I assume attaching the HERO not to the front of the AS but e.g. to the side in the back, will be out of reach given the huge TVs and ASs you drive in the US :-)

For WiFi it will be no issue and you can either use the GoPro app or the GoPro remote control (in case it is part of your package) to operate the cam.

Battery time is super limited for GoPros, so take care to have it fully charged when starting and record your footage soon after starting your drive.

Harry

P.S. First post here on the forum. Can't wait to get my European AS ordered for March next year :-D We live in Germany. Great forum, I like it!

Cool!

Realized it takes a geek to enjoy this when my wife asked me what I was watching and I said "this guy made a great video of his airstream in tow with his GoPro mounted on his truck!" She looked at the video for 10 seconds, looked at me and said "seriously, that's what you're watching?" I didn't tell her I watched BOTH of them a few times each!

We do all of the time. Our 1964 has the removable front vent, I stuck a mount to the top of it. I had used the suction cup but it came loose after a few hours - thank goodness I had a tether!

It's not like you get a bunch of unique video, after a few minutes of seeing the front cap, the truck and a few cars zooming by everything starts gets real repetitive.

I like this idea - seems to me it would work well as a backup camera or a what's happening behind me camera when we are going down the road plus I would have a GoPro for whatever else I wanted to use it for. Can the GoPro be turned off and on by the app when not in use to conserve battery power? Will the WiFi version work the same or should I spring for the HERO4 with the Bluetooth?

My iPad will barely control the wifi gopro from the cab of the truck to the top of the front cap. I doubt it would reach to the rear of the camper for use as a backup camera.

Yes, you can control the power but it stays semi active because it's still monitoring the wifi so battery life is better but still limited to a few hours

This works great if you have an iPhone and want a rear view camera: rvrearviewcamera.com.
