So we always stay in pet-friendly motels using coupons to get the best available rates. $89 is over budget for us. Coming back we stayed in a Motel 6 north of Nashville. As we were going to bed, my wife discovered a flee. In fact the room was infested. She could not sleep and her and the dog spent the rest of the night in the van. We got our money back with much apologies, but the experience has soured me on traveling.
I'm thinking that maybe an AS is the answer for us. No fleas to worry about! No bedbugs to worry about! No stale cigarette smoke (even though it was suppose to be a non-smoking room). No filthy shag rugs. No stains on the bed sheets (use your imagination). No crappy pillows. No 20-year-old TV sets or furniture that the homeless shelter discarded. I could go on!
Traveling with all the comforts of home would be a dream come true!

Funny notion, but true.
A couple of years ago we were in Cody, Wy, and a ~43-44' Prevost with a ~28' matching trailer grabbed the two spots beside us at the campground. We watched the driver hop out and direct a matching painted Class C, driven by a woman, into the slot across the driveway. These two worked frantically to set up the most amazing camp, including the removal of an AMG S600 convertible from the trailer and arranging a linen covered table. Shortly thereafter, a couple (mid- fifties) emerged from the Prevost and took off in the MB.
I wandered past with my dogs on a walk and the woman approached to meet them. In our conversation, I learned the two drivers were the 'support' team for the owners. They did the driving, cooking, fire starting, beverage service, set-up/breakdown, laundry, etc., for the owners and lived in the Class C.

I saw a vintage (1966 or so) Prevost MoHo on ebay a while ago- kind of spartan by today's Prevost standards, but still rather nice: It had a separate bunk and bath at the very rear, accessible from the outside only, for the driver. The couple who commissioned it just rode along, and I imagine the driver took care of set up at camp. It was not much, maybe $25K, well maintained.

That is, not much for a Prevost MoHo.

I was. Thanks for explaining why you were carrying a candelabra and China to another's site.
BTW, I was truly impressed with your driving skills with such a monsterous rig.

I think we're still camping.

So many forms of RVing, from the Prevost with servants to confirmed boondockers - whatever makes your duck quake. My wife and I started tent camping in my park ranger days (state beach parks near Santa Barbara), went to a VW camper with the kids (loved it), abandoned camping for Four Seasons hotels (hated it - just had to go through a fancy phase I guess), and now an old Airstream (all-time favorite).
Even with an Airstream you can go pretty fancy at RV resorts or pretty basic boondocking. I think we are working our way back to ranger days - we prefer state parks, BLM and NFS campgrounds, probably on our way to more boondocking as we already dry camp a lot. My wife is a real gamer as her dad was a park ranger and she spent more than one summer manning remote fire lookouts accessible only by horseback. We both love the outdoors.
I don't have a catchy name for our version of Airstreaming, I think of it as real camping, but very comfortable camping. We're usually without hookups and television and often Internet access. We often cook over a campfire, but we have do have comfy beds and Lazy Boys in the trailer. We do enjoy WBCCI rallies with the Oregon Chapter though which are pretty much always in RV parks, but that's about the only time we spend in those.
Everyone is different in their choice of RVs and how they use them. For me, the important thing is to find my own sweet spot, enjoy it, and not judge the way others choose to experience it. That last part is a challenge sometimes.
Cheers,
John

I think we may all do it slightly differently- I used to drive across the US, sleep in my Tercel wagon but make fabulous food over a campfire and have espresso several times a day- but we all share the wanderlust, I'd say. it gives you something to talk about with other campers. We're camping at the moment in a funny little campground near Cloverdale CA.

I enjoy just doing things a little more simply and slower than I do at home. That is why I am having an internal argument with myself over what to do with my newly acquired Argosy. I have a 14ft canned ham trailer that I love...no bathroom, only an ice box and a sink with holding tank and hand pump...it has a stove and oven but I use the oven as a cupboard. I bought The Argosy because I just wanted more space...but now that I have it I am trying to decide if having a bathroom and a few more luxuries wouldn't be nice after all.

The bathroom makes some things easier- it's nice to be able to bathe in your own trailer and not have to trek to the campground facilities- we did that for a long time. There is something cool about being able to do everything within the little trailer.

We still use the campground bath house most of the time, but it is nice to have our own shower if it is raining or cold.

For 33 years we had a teardrop trailer... so even our cooking was outside! But as we "aged" we decided having a bathroom inside would be so nice...especially when raining and it is in the middle of the night. So we hunted for quite some time and finally found our Bambi on eBay. Hubby did a restoration 10 years ago and we still love it. Ours is fully self contained, but we still can enjoy the very cozy nature of a small trailer.
