Gain more countertop space

We've never really used cutting board sink covers that came with our Airstreams. Yes they add countertop space but usually we also want to get at the sink.

This was discussed on a thread a while back and today I finally followed up on my plan. I cut a hole in the cover to get both sink access and more countertop space. It actually gives almost as much space as the fold-down extension does.

I'll try it out this weekend and see how it works.

Any downsides, like splashing on the counter when rinsing things off? Would you cut the hole in the same place if you had it to do again? Bigger? Smaller? Your idea intrigues me.

Like the idea too, I have hung mine on a command hook next to stove top on wall, stores nicely and available when I need it.

Well I'm happy with the way it works. During meal prep you can get water, put used utensils in the sink, grab the sponge- and still have that extra counter space. Then just remove it for dishwashing.

Greg- I just used an electric jig saw with a pretty course blade, then sanded the edges a bit. I'll do a little more finishing now that I know the size of the hole is right.

As a bonus we found that the hole was the perfect size for carrying our Brita pitcher in the sink, and it ensures the cutting board stays put when on the road. It was purely coincidence.

Cheryl has been using a cutting board/strainer that fits over the sink in a similar way. This looks quite a bit better, nice job. I'll have to see if I can find that sink cover, been put away since the trailer was new.

Well done! I think ours is under the bed somewhere not doing any good at all.
Thank you for sharing your clever idea.
And what a happy accident that the Brita pitcher fits perfectly.
I think they call that serendipity.

What a cool idea! Ours lives under the couch and is easily accessible if I need more prep space.

Sooty I missed your request- we are on the road. I'll send the photos.

This has turned out to be a really useful mod.

Very clever. Saw this in person yesterday when a nearby Airforums member was kind enough to show me their Airstream. This is the way these cutting boards should come from Airstream. What a vast improvement.

Can be used to slide veggie/fruit trimmings into waste bowl below, ventilation while board is on sink longterm, and you can wash hands or quickly turn water on without removing the cutting board. Such a simple, yet clever, idea. Love it. Buying our first Airstream this year and this is on the 'to-do' list.

I meant to show to someone when I was at the mothership a couple of weeks ago. But I forgot to.

We are adding a flip up side board beside the sink on the 23D similar in concept to the one that was in the 25FB and the Classic.
