So glad to find this thread because I was having these vague "what if someone asks to borrow my precioussss" thoughts and my mental answer was a guilty NO. Now I won't feel guilty if the situation ever does arise.

Why others even ask is the part that gets me . . sort of, "riding the bus to work is a drag. Wonder if my neighbor will let me use his 1960's show car if I gas it up?"

Repeatedly dropping hints to borrow is just appalling. These wouldn't be friends or even fellow Zoroastrians, (or whatever).

I have a very old portable welder that was my grandfathers. Big old thing on a trailer (the welder, not my grandfather) and a friend asked to borrow it. I said, "Sure, as long as it returns in the exact same shape it left in." When he asked what I meant by that, I told him, "It's old. That engine could throw a rod, seize up, welder could burn out. I'm just saying that you're responsible to repair it to it's current state of operation no matter what, if it breaks on your watch." He decided he didn't need to borrow it after all...

A camper, being such a complicated beast, I believe I could convince someone rather quickly they didn't want to borrow it under those conditions. This actually happened when my sister had guests coming in from out of town, and wanted to borrow my "SOB" for a guest house. Starting with towing basics, and ending in dumping waste fluids, with everything in between, she decided it just wasn't worth the effort.

If I ever borrow something, I try my dead level best to return it in better shape than when I borrowed it. I expect no less from others. Loan out my AirStream? Sure... just as long as you understand everything that goes with it.

-Red, whose AS is on blocks with major portions missing at the moment, and, who really wants to borrow that?

You'd be getting several offers per week here in the oilfield. Nice ones.

I barely let my kids come and look inside. No way no how. I explain it's like me lending them my used underware, they wouldn't like it.

Just a few days ago I asked an electrician friend to help with wiring of our gutted AS. He said, well how about instead of paying me you just let us borrow it a few times?

My coffee flew out of my nose, we are flat out going to ask someone else PAY THEM. I was actually a little offended.

"Hey, how about I borrow the 57 Chevy you lovingly restored for the last 10 years and take a bachelor party road trip to Vegas?"

I agree, the audacity to ask. How about "Gee we started up some of the appliances and there were some sparks and we also thought we smelled gas. We think mice might be chewing the wires.

Tell them something that will be very kind but will prevent them from ever asking again.

Most of my Airstream buddies would rather loan out their wife before loaning out their rig...

Nah, just insomnia...I definitely check in here a lot though just to keep motivated on even the little things i am planning to do for our Silver Twinkie 👍👍👍

I am continually surprised how little respect i see for other peoples belongings.

Once I borrowed a neighbors carpet steam cleaner and a piece fell down the toilet as I was dumping out water. I found the part online, told the owner what happened, installed the new part when it came, and gave the machine the cleaning of its life before i returned it. She offered me a job at her company!

My dads truck comes back to him gassed up and washed and with a big hug.

I would lend out my husband but he's working on our Airstream.

Conundrum....

I don't believe that! Never ever never! We loaned out our other brand trailer one time. It cost 1/3 what our shiny silver trailer cost. Anyway, I was saying we loaned out our other trailer to our daughter. She thought she was helping us when we came to bring the trailer home. She had stacked fire wood in my trailer. NO! Absolutely not! The wood goes in the bed of the pickup. She had put her bicycle in my trailer! NO! Absolutely not! The bicycle goes in the bed of the pickup. She has a stinky dog. Stinky dog in $18,000 trailer is one thing. Stinky dog in $97,000 MSRP trailer different story- never ever never! And I mean that! Ya heard me?
