Christmas 2011

So, we're new Airstreamers this year and we're thinking about doing something completely "off the wall" this holiday season. We live in the San Francisco Bay area and we're considering taking our Airstream someplace out of the immediate area to celebrate Christmas.

So a question for my fellow aluma-fanatics in Northern California: Can you suggest some really cool, maybe not so obvious, places we could go that are within a couple hundred miles of San Francisco/San Jose? Dry camping is fine, but not excited about traversing Donner Pass in December.

Thanks for the info,

Go South, Young Man...

The desert region may beckon you...check out Red Rock Canyon State CG, just north of Mojave...or, one of Death Valleys several CG's...or like many Angelinos, Palm Springs or Indio areas...cool nights, but the days can be spectacular!

The Pismo Beach area is great, and has mild winters usually...

We went down to Death Valley this spring, and it was an easy drive down to Red Rock Canyon SP for our first stop...Hwy-99 to Bakersfield and East on Hwy-58...about 300 miles, however...
Welcome to Red Rock RRCIA - Mojave, California USA

We've threatened to 'bail' and do the same thing to 'escape' the area for the holidays...

We 10 days on the State Beach at Pismo during Thanksgiving week a couple of years ago, and the weather was great, with only one windy day to deal with...

Have a great time...

Hi Road Geezer
We live in Santa Rosa and are planning to escape the holiday madness as well. We are trying out a campground up in the Redwoods this weekend as a potential place to spend Thanksgiving or Christmas- I'll let you know how it turns out.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a great place for winter camping...it may be a bit too south for you, though... We spent New Year's there once with AS friends...

Oh, Mrs. Bale, I think you have a great idea with the going to the red woods. That sounds like a real Chistmas with those big trees and all.

Becky and I have reservations in Laguna Beach at Crystal Cove Moro CG for 5 nights over Christmas then down to San Clamente at San Mateo CG for 6 nights around New Years. Maybe we will be lucky and see some other Airstreams over the holidays and share some holiday cheer!

Really love the Gold Beach area, right on the California/Oregon border.

Christmas in an Airstream. Sounds wonderful. Far from the maddening crowds....cranky relatives.....boring parties....etc.

If the weather is nice, (not raining), you may want to look at the KOA at Feather Falls Casino. This KOA is one of the best in Northern Calif, (clean & new). Close to the bay area, no major passes to cross, good food, (one of the best buffets around), a fantastic Brew Pub, plus most weekends... great live music.

The Bunny and I stayed here last weekend and had a great time!
