Carrying a firearm tends to set aside sensible choices. No matter how "proficient" you are, they are a risk to innocent people and yourself.

I grew up with firearms, used them in a 30 year military career, but wish people would leave them at home.

Discussion?

Sometimes it's hard to resist the temptation to wade into these discussions, and I try to only comment on those topics which I have a little experience, or expertise. I'm also tempted by those dreaded, yet highly educational and entertaining, "Overnight Parking at Wal-Mart" threads, too. There have been some excellent points made about safety, and the necessary training required before acquiring a firearm.

That said, I spent over 25 years in law enforcement during which I used a variety of firearms and weapons as tools of the job. This tour includes all the usual requisite experiences, such as investigating weapons violations, shootings, suicides, etc. My jurisdiction was statewide, and ranged from rural, urban, to parks and campgrounds.

As a police and civilian firearms instructor, I was exposed to a variety of people, their attitudes, and levels of competency, and can confidently say that not everyone should be carrying a firearm. (Not everyone should be be driving cars, either. But that's another topic.) So far, I'm not too impressed with the screening process of either.

My family were hunters, so I was raised around firearms, and was taught to respect their potential. Over the years, I have also amassed quite a collection. Many were inherited, but I also am fascinated by British military and police firearms, and have some Enfields and Webleys. In the unlikely event my house was raided, depending on the reporting news agency, this could be considered a modest collection, or a cache of dangerous military assault weapons.

I have done considerable traveling, and have crossed many borders, yet still don't feel qualified to make an assessment of the mindset a country based on what I heard on their news channels. I'm also of the opinion that carefully selected statistics, and anecdotal information, can be crafted to bolster either side of a discussion.

As pointed out out by another poster, I'm grateful for the freedom of choice. For now, I choose not to carry concealed. I suppose, based on experiences, that could change.

And finally - to quote Clint Eastwood - "I have a very strict gun control policy. If there's a gun around, I want to control it".

Well Rocco, that's a movie script spoken by an actor. The realities are quite different.

Why do I always hear the song "Freedom Isn't free" From Team America world police when these type of discussions pop up. Why here?
This is a forum for Airstreams. Can we please discuss Airstreams?
Next thing we will be discussing the evils of socialisim, same sex marriage, Women's reproductive rights, and religion.
I never thought I would read something like this here, feel the need to chime in. Can we agree to disagree, delete this forum and talk about our love of Airstreams?
All I know is that I don't have to pack heat while camping in Canada. Nuff Said.

I have always chosen not to post to the many firearms topic threads, but I will respond to this post. At the top of the comments, in the blue bar there is a drop-down menu titled "Thread Tools." One of the choices is "Ignore This Thread." If you choose that, you will never even see this thread again. I have used it for threads I didn't care to follow in the past.

If this thread bothers you, choose that. Don't call for restrictions on others.

That is the American way.

I'm hesitant to go here but feel compelled to ask, why does my choice of gun ownership/ nonownership offend so many people, amd why does it always come down to safety against "bad guys"? I have had a permit for nearly 30 years, have never drawn on anybody- and pray I never need to. BUT- I have drawn and fired warning rounds at a cougar that was stalking my children (in less than 6 inches of dry grass) in a state park. Woke up all the other parents VERY quickly to watch the cougar take off. Amazingly not one parent objected at all
BTW if I happen to be in carry mode around you, you will not know it unless you are a very attentive professional. This is part and parcel of being a responsible and serious american citizen.
Feel free to disagree with my opinions and choices but please, if you are going to have an opinion, at least take the time to educate yourself adequately.
"I've already formed an opinion, please dont confuse me with facts" is a bumpersticker slogan, NOT a life choice

Fact is,, like my ordeal in my first post,,, I have never told anyone else about our run in at the local lake until now.. Point is,,, For every bad thing one hears about fire arms on the news,, 2000 times being armed has stopped a problem before it got out of hand..
Mostly just showing you are not a sheeple,,, is all that's needed..

But I underscore that without the proper training,, its more of a danger to all,, than not.. You cant just pack a gun under the kitchen sink if you cant hit anything with it or know how to safely use and handle it...

How long to I stall before taking it too the next level.. Once a gun is show en its just cant be put away until the problem goes away.. Where will the bullet go?,, what will be the back stop to stop it?,, are they going to return fire and are you in a good protected place to have the battle?.. Months of training are required to full grasp all the factors..

My wife and I have trained together and have a plan A,, plan B and a plan C.. .We even have a code word and or hand signal that if I feel I might be in trouble and need her to set up cover,,,, she know where the fire arm is at and can hit a coffee cup at 50 yards.. Day or night..

As times get harder the more and higher percent are out looking for easy pray..

Sodbust

Thank you Sodbust for taking the time to be educated and prepared, too many are neither today. As my grandmother used to say-"common sense aint common" I will never display provocative bumper stickers or flash weapons which might, rightfully, make others nervous but like many I will always try to be prepared for an emergency.
looking forward to meeting you sometime- you seem like good people.

I find this topic on target. When I decided this year to buy an AS my family mentioned that I should also consider a firearm if I planned to travel on the back roads of the country - not necessarily for use against people but potential protections from animals as well. Recently there was a media story of kayak campers who were going down river and a grizzly literally came after them. The guy shot his gun in the air and made the bear rethink his plan. On a personal note, I was assaulted years ago in a parking lot coming out of the grocery. Yes, it can and does happen as Mojo said. Historically guns were survival tools and still are today. The difficult thing in carrying a gun is that if you have it, you must be ready to use it-- responsibly.

On the plus side is...if we met at a campsite..you would never know if I did or did not have a gun on my person.

That's the first priority. Have a good time and don't worry.....

Life is short,....enjoy life and be comfortable doing so. This makes me comfortable.

Better reholster the potato peeler there, chef. Airstreams are as American as apple pie with a wedge of the Second Amendment on top.

Nuff said.

Besides going back and forth on if it's correct to carry a gun or not; which comes down to a basic bicker match... Is there any more specific things the original poster would like to hear about that are more on the subject?
For instance:
"What kind of weapon would be best suited for a particular kind of protection? (i.e, Bear, Human, snake)
"What specific precautions do people take with their weapons?"
"What possible consequences are there if one is carrying unlawfully?"

These type of more specific questions might steer the conversation to more fertile pasture and allow people to address questions that are directly relevant to you (unless you are truly more interested in the gun control debate itself).
