The Airstream factory doesn't do customizations such as recliners, but the Airstream Service Center next door does. That means you pay for the standard interior, then again for the custom interior work. $110 an hour plus parts/material, or about $4,000 for recliners, folding extension table, console, and custom storage cabinet such as we had done. In the overall cost of the Airstream and compared to other options, not unreasonable.

The good thing is the parts/material is at hand, they start on it 0700 the morning of your appointment, and don't set it aside until it's done. It can retain your new factory stye/appearance if planned well. And they pull it out to their free campground for you to use each night.

Hmmmm, an Eddie Bauer hatch on a 30' FB to slide your toys in without disturbing your personal living space? Maybe removable bunks. Not bad, I'll bet they could do it.

After reading these posts, I really think I am going to order a trailer. If I am going to pay that much for a trailer, I want it exactly how we want it even if it is a few dollars more.

Do you think I still negotiate on an ordered trailer like one that is on the lot?

Yes, you still haggle the price.
In 20/20 hindsight I should have gotten:
1. Eddie Bauer tire and wheel package
2. Inverter
3. Solar
4. Cocoa ultra leather
5. Aluminum backsplash in the bathroom
6. Twin beds
7. Stainless furnace and water heater covers
8. Stainless storage compartments
9. Stainless water/sewer compartment
10. No sky lights
11. No convection oven
12. Silver MaxxAir cover
13. Stainless vent hood cover
14. Pro-Pride
15. Stacks and vista views and panoramic in the bedroom
16. Rock tamers
Some of these things might be added anyway. I don't foresee selling or trading- ever-

There it is right there. That's how we want to feel once we own our trailer. We are doing our homework now in hopes we get it as right as possible. We intend to order a 2014 and never look back.

The missus wanted espresso ultraleather instead of either black or tan, so we paid the standard $500 upgrade fee. Otherwise, only added the extra awnings and inverter. Thought hard about the convection oven but the many posts on the forum convinced us to stick with the lp oven, a wise choice as you can always buy a cheap aftermarket micro convection oven.

All other upgrades will be done aftermarket. Did the 16" wheels and tires, and will likely consider solar. Xbox arrives tomorrow, will be nice for the kids during rainy days. Will likely upgrade hifi with better speakers, sub, amp. The forum has also convinced me that a converter and maxim upgrades are in my future.

Funny thing is-
I am satisfied with the sound system.
It is so much better than the system in our previous sob trailer.
I could see adding an amp to the 6 1/2" coaxials or a bigger sub and amp, but what's there is pretty good- and I am pretty hard to please.
Every car I have ever had I replaced the entire system, including ones with so-called high end audio like Bose or JBL.
No original equipment is ever as good as aftermarket, but Airstream already uses auto aftermarket stereo equipment. I love the Bluetooth Sony and the SAS sub.
Not feeling any immediate need for any upgrades.
Not as good as the systems in my cars or house, but pretty good.

One item not mentioned so far is the AS flag box. I added it to my trailer and have enjoyed the extra storage. I installed it myself and ordered it thru an AS dealer.

A lot of the fun of owning an Airstream is customizing yourself. I custom ordered my 27 international serenity. Factory options:

1. Ultra leather
2. Awning package
3. Microwave.

I added myself

1. 400 watt solar and inverter (wired to all outlets switched through main panel). Got it all for a lot less $'s than factory.
2. Bedroom TV (24" Samsung from Costco.
3. Second full width sewer pipe storage (Airstreams is smallest sold).
4. Pneumatic lifter for bathroom vanity mirror door.

To go:

1. Dual 6 volt deep cycle batteries (need battery box mods).
2. Better tires.

The mirror is top-hinged? Weird. I would have thought that bottom-hinged, so it opens to make a shelf, would be better.

I guess it is different depending on the model of trailer.
I will say for the 30' Classic a second Fantastic fan would be where the second a/c is- in the one bedroom at the rear of the trailer. The one Fantastic fan is at the front of the trailer above the couch. The first a/c (the only a/c if equipped with one) is about midways of the length of the trailer in the kitchen/dining area.
I guess it is different for the Flying Cloud because it has 2 bedrooms/different layout.
So- where are the 2 a/c's in a bunkhouse?
I like the placement of the 2 a/c's in the 30' Classic because the bedroom and living area can be heated/cooled separately with the mid-bath doors closed, or- with the bathroom doors open we can use the back a/c to cool the whole trailer when we are in the front and vice versa because the units are loud- especially when watching television- to keep from constantly turning volume up/down. Running audio through the stereo system helps, too- the speakers are closer to my ears-
On the 30' Classic, the rear a/c is mounted in the same place as the Fantastic fan would be if you only had 1 a/c.

Yes, it is top-hinged- and has no supporting struts like the overhead lockers have-
so you have to hold it up with one hand (and it is HEAVY) while you reach in with the other hand to get something out...

It's top hinged, and its heavy, and the only way to browse though stuff in the cabinet was to lay the door on top of my head. It gave me a headache. Here's a YouTube video I made of the door in operation. Installation of the lifter was an easy project.

I sent the video to Airstream as an obvious improvement for future models, but they blew it off.

Purchased from Rockler. Lift-O-mat gas spring. I purchased item #34373. The kit includes two springs and mounting hardware (minus screws). I only needed one of the springs to properly lift the door. I gave the other lift to a friend with the same cabinet in his AS.

Thanks for the part number and video showing the gas shock in action. How did you fasten the gas spring to the mirror?

I have AC unit in front bedroom - then fantastic fan in front of entry door then next the skylight (dead center) then AC unit (just behind center line) - then back in bunkhouse is a fantastic fan.

I believe (no idea though) - that if no second AC then above front bed queen bed would be a skylight??

Not sure

The back of the mirror is attached to a piece of plywood, 1/2 inch thick or so. I simply used some small wood screws.

The gas springs come with installation instructions. The tricky part is placement of the lift so that it clears all the parts of the vanity box when closed, but also holds the door open high enough to provide good access. I admit had to re-install it a couple times to get the perfect placement.

Bathroom mirror

How odd. My Eddie Bauer AND the prior 2006 Safari FB have the top lift mirror, but it has a "hinge lock" on the left side - similar to what you'd see on an old WWII footlocker or other trunk. You open the door, push UP almost to the ceiling, and the Hinge locks the door open. To close you reach up and release the locking device.

Yours is missing a piece from the factory gents.

Paula
