Riveting a '59 FC Entrance Door.

I need to re-rivet the entry door to my '59 Flying Cloud. Q#1: what kind of rivets can I use? Q#2: Do I need to open interior to fasten the rivet? I'm desperate!

Modernrat,

It depends on what you need to rivet. Can you post a picture.

Bill

If they are off you will need to get the alignment right. These doors are a challenge. The original rivets are not aluminum on the hinges. I think they are a high strength stainless. I tried to drill one out of my 59 overlander and gave up. Need harder bit.

You will likly end up using a stainless pop rivet. Use the whole in the hinge to determine the size. Options 2 hope that Andy (Inland RV) has a response.

Modernrat,

I had the bottom hinge on the front door of my Liner come off the body this summer. The hinges were pop-riveted to the body. When I receive the new hinges, I will buck rivet them to the body, after placing reinforcements behind the skin.

What happened to the hinge?

Bill

OK, those are not the same as my 59. Don't know what's original. Looks to me like you need some olympic pop rivets. You will need a rivet tool from sears. If you only need a few send me your address by PM and I'll send you some. If you need some for other areas they are easily had online.

Here's what I would do.....your mileage may vary, and there's no batteries included...
Loosen and peel back the inner skins immediately behind the problem area.
Now, make some shims of aluminum from .050, or at least .032 sheet aluminum. Make the shim as large as possible, even if you have to use extra rivets to fasten it outside of the hinge circumference.
Drill the existing pattern into the shim, ( or backing plate, if that makes more sense)

Now fasten hinge with buck rivets to the outer skin, and backing plate.
The buck rivets will hold very well, and the backing plate ( shim) will give the assembly more stability.

You might have to do the same to the door as well.

The rivets are MS20470AD5-X, X= the length in 1/16th inch increments. The rivet before bucking should protrude from the back side approx. 3/16". The doubler suggested by Uwe is an excellent idea. Put another row of rivets around the hinge but through the external skin and the new internal doubler. Do this on each side of the hinge, both top and bottom

Thankyou Area63, Over59, wkerfoot & Aerowood! Think I'll go for the reinforced buck rivet plan. Pray for me.
mrat.
