OOOps. Dropped my cargo hatch :-(
I have a '68 Caravel. I was on a road trip and dropped the removable cargo hatch that covers my battery and storage. It was completely destroyed, exploding into hundreds of little aluminum scraps. How do I find another or get another made?

You probably lost that door due to rear end separation, I would get that fixed before putting a new one in. I also believe that vintage trailer supply has started to manufacture them as well.

Only one service door that I can see. In front of the axle...Probably not rear end separation.

DOH! I assumed (dont say it) it was a rear panel. Still, that door shouldnt be able to come out without the latch failing or frame separation.

I worry about mine, I always make sure it is securely latched and locked before we move. I imagine a replacement would be pretty hard to find.

I kinda live in fear of this, too. I've considered a wire attachment line that would be short enough so that it wouldn't drag on the road if it came off. Maybe a small hook on the back of the panel so that when the door is off, it could hang from a little loop attached to the skin? A little invasive, but better than the terror of the access door search.
That being said, there seem to be more options for replacement out there all the time- good luck, I bet you can find one. If you don't find an actual replacement, I think a thicker piece of aluminum with some reflectix insulation on the back and a lock mounted through it would be a good interim fix.

access doors.
Access doors on the 64 to 68 trailers, do have a tendancy to fall off.
The worst case, is the rear door. Usually, rear end separation, separates the rear access framing at the lower corners, which then enlarges the actually opening, resulting in the door falling out.
The side access doors, when they fall off, is usually because of a poor lock adjustment and/or a bad gasket.
A good gasket for those doors, also stops them from moving and looking for the right bump, then falling out.
The fix is easy. Have tight gaskets and have the lock paddle or arm, adjusted so that you must push in the door a little, in order to properly lock it in place.
Our experience is that probably 95 percent of those access doors that fall off, could have been avoided.
The other 5 percent is due to rear end separation.
In the case of these doors, a little PM, goes a long way.
