New Access door for '65 Globetrotter
My 12 by 18 access door abandoned ship somewhere in a road construction detour between Pinedale and Jackson Hole, WY.
It looks like a pretty easy fix. I looked at RJ Dial's VintageAirstream.com website. That was helpful. I might do it the same way he did.
I also see that VTS sells moulding for the access doors. Also the aluminum. I was thinking of going with VTS because I can get everything from one place. The problem is that I have a hard time telling from the pictures if their moulding will work. I have a 65 Globetrotter. The moulding needs to be flat so it can slide into the c channel on top. If the moulding is thick, it won't work. One of the pictures on the VTS website makes the moulding look thick, but VTS says it will work on a 65.
I am leaning toward the VTS moulding because it looks like building the access door will be easy as framing a picture. But I thought I should check the forums first.
Any suggestions?
Does anybody sell access doors allready made?

65 access doors do not use any moldings.

Thanks Andy!
I looked at one of the remaining access doors and you are correct. The 65 access door looks like a single sheet of aluminum that was hemmed on the edges with a brake, and also a dead air space and interior wall was created to add rigidity to the door. This looks like it was done with a single sheet that was folded with a brake.
The thing is, I don't have a break, and it looks pretty difficult to recreate the 65 door. That is why I was thinking of cutting out a rectangle of aluminum and adding moulding on the back, or around the edges to make the door rigid.
Maybe I will check to see if a local sheet metal shop can fabricate a door for me that matches the 65 door.
Can Inland RV sell me a door? It is the streetside battery compartment door that accesses the battery compartment under the goucho.

Yes, all we need is the dimensions.

Make your own access door...
I have a '64 Bambi II, thankfully with all of its storage doors intact and present. I have already thought about what I would do if one went missing, and it seems like a no-brainer to me.
All I would do is have a piece of 1/8" aluminum sheet cut to the proper dimensions, then bevel the edges a bit to fit into the channel. A trip to the local hardware store would produce the lock mechanism (for about $4-6 bucks), cut the squared hole for the lock, install and done. Don't think too hard on this one.
Dad and I kept his old Airstream on the road for years before information sharing on the internet was made available to common folks and with hardware store materials and good old fashioned American ingenuity. We rarely took it to any kind of dealership and internet searches for parts, like I said, were not in the cards.
I have made two access doors for my old Scotty and I used 1/8" aluminum sheet. Sturdy as all get out, heck probably more sturdy that the whole rest of the trailer. The originals...now they were flimsy!

I'm with PA BAMBI II
You can make your own access door. I too was going to purchase from an online retailer but you can make your own for about 1/16 of the cost. Plus, this will be a special order item and any mistake in measurements causing an ill-fitting or non-fitting door will leave you holding the bag. I think the quote I got was around $125.00 plus shipping.
We used a small piece of leftover aluminum sheeting from the belly pan and it took my friend about 20 minutes to make.
After losing a locking core while traveling down the road and watching my refrigerator access door hurtling end-over-end towards a cyclist on the road, I now use sheet metal screws for my doors. I'm not in them very often and its much safer for me to know these panels are secured.
You can see my replacement here: 1967 Airstream Globetrotter: Leftover Aluminum
Good Luck!

Please be advised that those doors are not special ordered.
Also, that door should be insulated.
A solid pice of aluminum, does not provide that.
