Airstream now sells Stainless Steel replacements. We sell them through our parts department.

Art,

You are right, these compartments along with the water compartment started to show rust on my Airstream the first year. I removed them, took them to the Linex bed liner shop and had them coated. Worked great but you will have to mask off the areas where the boxes attach to the trailer since the Linex coating is quite thick. There are several other alternatives perhaps have them powder coated or spend the big bucks and get the stainless steel replacement boxes available from Airstream.

Linex or something similar that can be purchased in any auto supply store work great! In our 2004 Classic S/O I coated the rear bumper pull out storage with a similar material that I could simply roll on with a small paint roller.
It is nice to know that Airstream now sells replacements. We must look into that.
Happy trails!

2008 Classic Bump Tray

Here is a photo of my bumper tray from our 2008 Class. We've had the trailer a year and it was in covered storage. This last week it got rained on pretty heavy and I found water had gotten into the rear bumper tray. I took the plastic mat out and found the bottom of the tray covered with a white chalk and some rust spots. What can I use to remove the white chalk and clean up the rust spots before I try any roll on berliner material.

I'd shoot it with cold galvanizing spray, paint with POR 15 then call it a day. Leave out the rubber liner thing. Water is going to get in, why trap it in?

Great advice, especially the POR 15, that stuff is tuff.

I guess I could use this kit. Wish it came in silver instead of black.
