In Southern Ontario the price is about 87 cents per litre today, that's about $2.70 US per gallon. We'll soon be heading out on our longest trip ever, to Alaska. Maybe we'll drive a little slower to improve the gas mileage, but like someone else said we're not going to let higher gas prices keep us from traveling with our kids - got to do it while they're young.

Whenever we go to NY state (about 60 miles away) we fill up at Smokin' Joes just accross the border near Lewiston. It's on an Indian reservation where the gas is about 15 cents per gallon cheaper than other stations in the area. The price was $2.07 last Saturday. You can get a similar deal near Evangola State Park on the south shore of Lake Erie. Anyone know of other places like Smokin' Joes, or is this just a New York state deal?

We got back about three weeks ago from a trip down to Charleston, SC with a side trip down to Savannah. It was about 2500 miles (2100 towing). We enjoyed every minute of it and never thought about not doing it or limiting our side trips, that would have put a real damper on our trip. The sticker shock you experience as the gas pump clicks off and you gasp at the 'new' all-time record high price you have to cough up is a momentary discomfort. Soon you're back cruising down the road, maybe a little slower than you used to go, occasionally looking back at that silver beauty and thinking about what fun you're going to have.

I hope we all have many happy trips, long or short.

What speed do most of you drive when on a trip in your airstream? Has anyone checked to see what the difference about 10mph difference makes in fuel economy?

I have been driving between 55 and 60 on most of my trips. I feel like that is plenty fast for traffic, but I have been wondering if it would be safe or worth it to drop to between 50 and 55 to conserve a little more gas.

I thought Diesel was alternative fuel?

What's the deal with diesel being $2.50/gallon? I drive a 2003 GMC Duramax crew and it costs over $60 to fill up. I usually use 3 tanks a week, (if I'm lucky). I recently picked up a little Toyota pickup to use as my daily driver because of the rising prices. Anyway, I thought diesel was an unrefined alternative fuel to gas meaning, IT SHOULD BE CHEAPER. Out here where I am there are a lot of diesel trucks and it seams like we are getting screwed, the gas companies raise the price on diesel just to keep up with gasoline. Atleast we finally woke up and realized we need to start drilling in Alaska.

I think that speed between 55 and 60 is quite appropriate for me. Once I go over the 60 mark I see the fuel starts to go a little faster. Personally I don't like getting below 55 since I feel I become more of a hazzard to other drivers. I'm already slow compared to those doing the max legal in Missouri of 70 mph. I'd rather spend a few extra $$ doing 60 in a 70 mph zone, than poking along at 50-55.

I had been wondering when this subject was going to be addressed. Gas is around $2.11 around here (Suwanee, GA) which is pretty low on the national average.
We are still planning to go west in about a month. At one point we considered not taking my jeep but since have decided that I will drive it out. It uses less fuel than the diesel truck and I really don't like to be without my own transportation for the five months we are gone. I am sure as we head westward the fuel prices will increase.
So what are the varying prices throught the United States. What can we espect.

Also, on another note. What do you guys do when poison ivy attacks??

I do know that the only thing you can get on the reservations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is casino chips! I have found nothing here that resembles the deals you can get on the reservations in New York. Cigarettes are really cheap on the reservations there. I guess it all depends upon the agreement the reservations have with the states. Not sure though.

We just put a 50-gallon auxilliary tank on our F-250 diesel. It takes a bank loan to fill it up, but we can go 2...maybe 3 days without needing to refuel. That might come in handy when we go to Alaska next month. We understand the further west one travels, the costlier the fuel, although my son in Anchorage says gasoline isn't any more expensive than here in Texas.
