San Diegians pay higher prices for gas (and everything else) so out of here it'll be cheaper while we make our way to Oregon end of June. This summer is our first official camping season in our Bambi so we have to go far to get away from the tourists taking up all the beach sites

ill bet that we people with heavier coaches, are rethinking our choice, and we who have oilers are wringing our hands, now that we are paying more per gallon then gas guzzlers.....

Well, gas costs about the equivalent of $3.70 US a gallon in Canada right now. I don't know what you're all complaining about .
The Expedition doesn't get much use during the summer, outside of family trips and vacation (my wife is a stay at home mom). I'm considering selling the Mustang GT and get a Mini Cooper S for a daily driver - saves about $100/mo in fuel. I can also drive the Mini in the winter a lot more...

Pulling a 34' with a 92 dodge cummings. On the trip back from Florida I slowed it down to 62 mph on the interstate, what a big difference in gas mileage. I won't be taking fewer trips or shorter ones, but I will be paying attention to having my tires pumped up to max pressure and keeping my foot off the firewall. in Feb 01 it cost me $0.11 per mile to drive 2000 miles from NC to FL @ 13.08 mpg. 9/01 the trip to Maine cost me $0.10 per mile to drive 4000 miles @ 15.6 mpg. The next trip to FL included driving the truck around town and the cost dropped to $0.08 per mile for 3500 miles @ 15.8 mpg. We went to the International rally in Vermont then onto Niagara Falls before heading home $0.11 per mile with 2600 miles driven. We did the southwest caravan last spring and drove 8000 miles almost all of it pulling. Fuel cost were going up and I averaged about $1.50 per gallon for the entire trip. I got 12.8 mpg. If the cost goes up to $2.50 per gallon for diesel my cost should rise to $0.20 per mile. I don't like it but at 300 miles on a long day the fuel cost will be $60, still doable. Thank God George Bush is in office I don't know how we got along before him.

well, bully for you mister bell, i took delivery on my 01 one week b4 diesel started climbing from 1.39 to where it is today...i figured that by paying a premium for a diesel engine, it would be defrayed by fuel prices... i did not calculate the cost of oil changes (today $81) and air filters( $26 at crazy murrays auto /parts)...am i whinning? yes, maybe, but i still love my oiler, and do not want to engage in a comparison game.....

As most of you know ... Petunia and I are fulltiming in our Airstream. After sitting in AZ for 5 months ... and doing very little driving ... it's been painful to see these prices at the pump. We paid $2.74 per gallon in El Centro, CA the other day.
However ... we doubt that the higher prices will change any of our travel plans. When adjusted for inflation ... fuel is still cheaper than it was back in '81.
Filling the tank is now a lot like voting ... we just hold our noses.

Porky. Diesel is running $2.60 in Paso Robles now. Even thought those oil rigs are running full time in San Ardo and Lost Hills. What was diesel in 1981 (adjusted for infaltion) going for?

So....I guess owning a gas powered motorhome that only cost you when you camp does have it's upside over those diesel tow rigs and trailers....nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more...
Seriously, We're headed back from CT to Louisville tomorrow in the 345. I've been tracking this trip a little more closely as prices are what they are. Quick summary: we took on 59 gals north of Cincy at 2.19 and then another 66 in eastern PA at 2.23. Gas is around 2.21 here in CT (surprisingly low).
We should require less fuel going home as when we left Louisville she was only at 1/3 of a tank and she's sitting above 3/4 tank right now so I estimate we're looking at under $500 for a family of five (with two dogs) to travel 1600 miles and spend a week with family. Not bad even when compared to cut-throat airlines or the Jeep and hotels/fast food.
Hard to make this trip any cheaper and have as much fun as we have been having with the flexible schedule we've been working around. The best part is that we ate our own food and slept in our own beds the whole time - and the kids loved it! Worth every penny.

Norby, I was just trying to say that yes costs are going up but they aren't going to keep most of us off the road. I can't do anything about the cost of fuel but I can do a few things to control how much of it I waste or use unwisely, I do like to track my usage, that way I can best determine what works for me. I will do what I can within reason to make certain that my rig is in the best possible shape for travel then enjoy this beautiful country of ours and the people I meet along the way.

I don't have the data for diesel ... but I do for gasoline ... it's probably all relative.
Based on 2003 dollars, adjusted for inflation ... regular unleaded gasoline peaked at $2.99 in California in March of 1981. That number would now be above $3.00 based on 2004 or 2005 dollars. Premium grade would obviously be much higher.
The bad news is it looks like we're closing in on the all time high. Yet today ... some traders were claiming the bull run in crude was over. I have my doubts.
Thanks for the Paso Robles update ... we'll be there on the 16th.

We are just planning shorter trips out to try to conserve on gas. We don't want to let these prices dictate what we do with our kids.

We don't even have a tow vehicle yet....
...; got the Sovereign home with a Ram 1500, but have been looking around for something a bit bigger. We're not in a big rush because Moby won't be ready for a while. We talked about buying a diesel truck because normally diesel is lower in cost. Hah! Not anymore.
But as for regular trips, we'll probably still be seen on I-35 going to Minn. to see the grandkids. After all, if we wait for the gas prices to go down, they may be grown by then.
Remember, many of us still pay $1.19 for 8 oz.(one cup) of bottled water.

Folks,
It's all ECONOMICS and how you want to spend your $$$$$$$. I would never cut back on streamin' and miss out on all the fun with you folks at RALLIES.
Tarheel, you have the right idea on how to stretch the gas mileage!
No......we are planning to go many places this year. They say we only live once, and we plan to do it to the FULLEST. STREAMIN... STREAMIN... STREAMIN
We save our Denali in the garage and only use it for towing. Otherwise,we drive fuel efficient cars to the work place.

Heard on the news today that the East Coast can expect $2.25 a gallon for the summer. Still won't deter us! After the winter we had we need to get out on the road!

Hello overthere,
please send us some fuel!! It is so cheap where you People live.
Todays fuelprices in northern germany are 5.85 US$ per gallon for Gas and 5.22 US$ per Gallon for Diesel ... And the German Government gets about 75% of the price (as Salestax (16%) and Ecotax) .

hi bjoern,
well, you are not doing quite so badly...it appears that fuel is only costing 1.47, and 1.31 respectively....time for you to speak out against your government....across the pond here our elected idiots are already conspiring(planning) to use g.p.s. to extract more money out of our pockets, for as our vehicles improve m.p.g., the idiots get less and less tax from us.
