I am seriously considering coating mine with a white elastomeric coating. This is a product that we use commercially with great results, and so far on my test piece I haven't had any kind of streaking. Truco Coatings
But like a lot of other things it is down the list aways

Why are we in this basket...and where are we going
I think what you are thinking of is the "Cruisette". It was a small Airstream made for weekenders...it had fewer amenities than it's big brothers, but it was also more economical. Kinda a "beginner Airstream"...alot of them have since been stripped of their white painted tops. They were only made for a year or so - 1951. Here's a link for additional info & pictures. Actually, there also is a great article by Fred Coldwell - the VAC Historian in the most recent Vintage Advantage about the Cruisette and it's features...as well as the other 50's models.

HI,
I was wondering if I could get a copy of the article on the Cruisette. I would love a copy of the Vintage Advantage if that is possible. I just got a 51 Cruisette and I don't know much about it.
A couple of threads that have some things to say about painting an airstream and the relative results of different kinds of insulation are the following:
In the first one listed I documented some tests that I performed on different types of sample panels including a both a white one and a red one. In general my personal conclusion is that paint on top of an AS helps mostly because it is an additional coating that reduces the amount of heat that transfers through the aluminum by conduction - not necessarily because it is more reflective than shiney aluminum is.
