Three that I know of - may be more

On the '78 Model 31'ers -

The Excella option had:

1.) An auto spool water hose reel.

2.) An auto-spool shore line electric reel.

3.) Two batteries (with access doors on each side of the front for battery access).

There may be more differences, but these three are all that I am aware of - I have a '78 Sovereign, and am using the service manual for a '78 Excella for reference during the "rebuild" currently ongoing.

Subject to correction by someone who actually knows, I do not believe the "Classic" and "Excella" nomenclatures were ever used contemporaniously.

The "Excella" name goes back to a period when there were two, or sometimes three levels of trim: Sovereign, Excella, and (in some years) Limited. This was more or less the mid to late 1980's. In the early 90's there were two choices of trim: "Excella", and "Limited". This continued into the late 90's with the addition of a lighter weight model, available only in certain sizes, called the "Safari". A few years ago the, uhm, classic model was renamed the "Classic", which seems to still be available in a higher price "Limited" version as well.

If you like, you may consider the late model "Excella" and the current "Classic" to be more or less the same.

My Airstream is a Excella Classic

The side name plates on my 93 Airstream read Excella Classic, what that means in regards to trim level is unknown to me.

Going by old sales catalogs which I have most all since 1987 the Classic name was added to the Limited and Excella line in 1991 when the new Land Yacht also known as the Square Stream was introduced. The Classic name has remained since then as the top line trailer when the new Sovereign line (1990) and later the Safari, International and CCD lines were introduced.
The Excella with a 500 (70's), II (79-81), or 1000 (82 on) added was an upgrade package from the base Excella. Each year was a different group of options but the package was cheaper than if each option was individualy ordered.

I would be interested to know what options were included with the Excella II package if anyone has that info. My '81 has a 12 volt doorbell which is pretty cool, but other than that it doesn't seem to have anything too fancy. Anyone have a 1981 Airstream brochure lying around that they can check? P.

So, if I have a 1981 Excella Limited was that the high end trailer for that year?

The Limited has always been the top model, allthough you could add options to the Excella which would make it the same except for the color of the exterior trim and awning.
