The iconic Lockheed tri-rudder airliner of the 50s, in addition to the oil storage behind each radial engine, had a 150 gallon oil tank inside the body and the flight engineer had to move it around between the four radial engines. My father said that on some of his flights West from Ireland across the Atlantic, sometimes an engine or two would be shutdown to conserve the engine oil so all four could be running during the approach and landing.

One rainy day, Destination Tokyo on the telly did cause me to flash on the idea of a sub theme. I had thought about changing the aft skylight to a hatch. The idea of pipes and cable runs (steam punk) for decoration would seriously cut into the living space, as the cramped passageways on those diesel subs.

Al and Missy, what does a Pullman blanket look like? Where can I find one? My grandfather was a Pullman conductor at Union Terminal in Cincinnati and that would be so fun. I remember him mentioning that he met Red Skelton.

Given that Airstreams are already more expensive than their competitors, might was well do a more exclusive version.

Why not do a polished aluminum skin, as in the old days? That's the thing everyone remembers anyway, and why I probably will always stay with the older ones.

I love the idea of extra attention to aerodynamics, as it just looks cool.
Retro elements, like painted wheels and baby moon hubcaps?

It would be a great platform for a number of different decor styles as have already been mentioned. Vintage Hawaiian kitsch for me, thanks.

I'm really curious about this. Where was this 150 gallon oil tank inside the body, and how would the engineer move it around between the four engines?

Dad told me the tank was in the belly and they would pump it to the engine in need
