2013 Cannondale Scalpel carbon 1 29er for the dirt and 2012 Cannondale Super Six EVO for the road. Both are more bike than I deserve but I do own a Bicycle shop so thats a perk I get.
I'd go to a good local bike shop and they should ask you appropriate questions to determine what bike is best for you and your needs. The folding bikes are compact when folded up sure are heavy compared to non folding. While mountain bikes are the most versatile the hybrids, city bikes and even geared beach cruisers are fairly versatile as well. Be sure and ride different types of bikes and really think what you plan to use the bikes for. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a quality proper fitting bike and the local shop should be able to help.

We ride Bike Fridays. We have one tandem folding bike as my wife is visually impaired and loves to bike. It breaks down into a pod we carry, and for my solo rides I have a Pocket Llama Bike Friday. Both are 27 speeds and in the 6 years we have owned them we have had no issues, and they are custom made for our riding style and needs.

Absolutely. But personally, I've had fun spending a fortune at times too.

Barcroft Columbia tandem recumbent. This is a shorter version of the Rans Screamer.
It saves the back, butt neck and wrists.

Have been riding and racing for decades and rode many styles of bikes. I don't race anymore. Too many aches and pains but still ride 100klm's a week to stay in shape.

I have a nice Kona Major Jake for road and trail riding but I'm starting to use my Trek Fuel 98 Race Bike for general riding. It is fast and light but so comfortable with the full suspension. I can see the day when this will be the only bike I ride.

For exploring off-road and some trails we use Gary Fisher hybrid bikes. We took them with us last year on our cross-country Airstream trip. Versatile.

But for 50-100+ miles on paved trails we use our Bacchetta Giro TT recumbents. Little wind resistance, extremely comfortable laid back seating (don't fall asleep), and not as geeky as many recumbents and not as long (about the same as standard bike so they transport in back of truck or bike rack). They're going this year.

Bike Friday for me

We stopped at the folding bike factory in Eugene, OR (my husband wanted to stop and I wanted to keep on the road) and, yes, Bike Fridays are built in the USA....after a factory tour and a spin around the shop, I decided to have one made for me......it will be delivered in early September.......it is hard to believe that this folding bike will be able to keep up with regular road bikes---that's what they say. It comes with a 30 day money back guarantee that is hard to argue with.....most of their sales are over the internet so you don't have to go there to order a bike......I am so excited.....can't wait for mid September. They are super people to deal with....they also have pre loved (used) bikes for sale. One of the owners developed the Burley.....for his daughter Hannah who is now a principal in the company.....go to their website for the full story.Bike Friday - Custom folding and travel bicycles hand-crafted in Oregon

Paula,
If you can keep up with the crowd on a regular bike you will be able to keep up on a Bike Friday. I have owned a couple over the years and regret selling them. Eventually I will probably buy another one.
I used to race with a guy that had one of the early ones, he was wicked fast on his regular road bike and the BF did not slow him down at all, if anything it made him even quicker because he could accelerate faster due to the small wheels.

I am really looking forward to riding the bike....I have a fiber carbon Trek that is too much for me.....I think that it is too big.....I have small hands and am short. I am hoping that this bike will fit better and make it so that I do more riding...and it folds up to boot. The folks at Bike Friday spent a lot of time trying to make this bike dream a reality. Thanks, paula
