After polishing the filiform out, wipe it with MEK or acetone, then protect it with automotive clear-coat found at autoparts stores or WalMart in a nail-polish type small bottle.

I've even cleaned up the boarding handle which so many complain of. (I'm out of town or I'd post a pic. The results are excellent and no further corrosion occurs at that spot.)

Filiform is caused when oxygen penetrates any protective covering. That covering might be composed of AlClad or Clearcoat or paint, etc. The edge of a sheet of 2024 such as used to construct an Airstream has an exposure to oxygen because the clearcoating was applied by Alcor when they supplied the sheets to AS, but the edges were CUT...and rivet-holes were drilled ...which exposes the aluminum edges to atmosphere.
The aircraft industry is quite familiar with filiform treatment and a common repair used in that industry (will not work for AS owners) is to treat the area with chromic acid then paint it. That treatment discolors the aluminum and would not work for this application, but polishing-away the filiform (which is only a superficial corrosion type on the surface) then protecting it from atmosphere with clearcoat will please you. Just be careful to determine the direction of the "grain" of the metal or you will end up with an area that appears more "polished" than that surrounding the treated area. (Still more attractive than rough, white-powdered aluminum spots.)
Sounds like a solution even though a little work is required. Thanks for the extended explanation!

It would be great to see some pictures. When you get an opportunity could we trouble you to post a few?

Again, thanks!

July 4, 1896, Happy Birthday Wallace Merle Byam

The Creed
In the heart of these words is an entire life’s dream. To those of you who find in the promise of these words your promise, I bequeath this creed…my dream belongs to you.
To place the great wide world at your doorstep for you who yearn to travel with all the comforts of home.
To provide a more satisfying, meaningful way of travel that offers complete travel independence, wherever and whenever you choose to go or stay.
To keep alive and make real an enduring promise of high adventure and far away lands…of rediscovering old places and new interests.
To open a whole world of new experiences…a new dimension in enjoyment where travel adventure and good fellowship are your constant companions.
To encourage clubs and rallies that provide an endless source of friendships, travel, fun, and personal expressions.
To lead caravans wherever the four winds blow…over twinkling boulevards, across trackless deserts… to the traveled and untraveled corners of the earth.
To play some part in promoting international goodwill and understanding among the peoples of the world through person-to-person contact.
To refine and perfect our product by continuous travel-testing over the highways and byways of the world.
To strive endlessly to stir the venturesome spirit that moves you to follow a rainbow to its end…and thus make your travel dreams come true.
–Wally Byam

Lighted Grab Bar

While at AS factory for some warranty work, had them install this on my 2016 28 foot Flying Cloud. Really like the look and it provides plenty of light on the lock set in the dark. Had it connected to the step light.

In the heyday of the American railroads, many railroads placed a "drumhead," or "tailsign," on the last car of their premier passenger trains. The drumhead was a lighted sign that (usually) displayed the name of the train.

One of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad's premier passenger trains was the Silver Meteor, which ran from New York to Miami and St. Petersburg, Florida. The Silver Meteor's drumhead is pictured here:

Our Airstream is named for the Meteor, and last week, on her way to the WBCCI Metro NY Unit's Independence Day Weekend Rally, she finally had her modern version of the Meteor's drumhead installed. She now proudly shows off her all-American railroad and Airstream heritage as she roams the highways.

We boondock a lot. Ice is always a problem because we usually have the freezer packed with things we will be eating, plus it is nice to have somewhere to keep beverages besides the fridge. I work some for a local outfitter who sells these. Awesome cooler.

After a few years of owning it, and lots of hoops jumped, I now have a TITLE! (and it's registration plate).

I couldn't bring myself to open my wallet to it without proper ownership.

When I saw them, they are very cute, I thought of the Colorado mountains capped with snow.

I made a bracket to mount my fresh water pump on in the vertical position.
I was trying to cram 10 pounds of plumbing in to a 5 pound spot.

About 7-10 years ago, wasn't there the attempt to form another club "TAC; The Airstreamers Club" and their number color was to be GREEN?

I installed our FanTastic vent and fan today in the Overlander. After reading many reviews and comments here on this thread, and after careful consideration, I decided on a MaxxFan, but bumped into the FanTastic I had ordered over a year ago. There was nothing extraordinary about the installation so I'll post a photo or two over on our rebuild thread.

Just made bracket and hope to wind up the fresh water this weekend. I will post pics when it's done.
