I take it you don't have arthritis...

My gift for the trailer today is going to be a couple of new batteries. I'm thinking of going with group 27s. The old ones are 'ok', but have been drained a couple of times before I put solar on top. I'm going to use them for the electric trolling motor on the skiff.

they dont need in most cases I presume....I just thought for 2 bucks it would give me an excuse to use my tools and do the deed a bit faster...

Why would you not use a tool you already have? The DeWalt is part of my tool kit anyway, might as well make use of it. I purchased and installed my stabilizers myself, the $1.99 adapter to drive the socket I already have was cheaper than the $19.99 handle for the stabilizers anyway.

I bought a socket big enough for the stabilizers so I could use a drill...
Then I decided that it was easier to use the hand crank than to keep up with the drill, the battery, the charger, the bit, and keep the drill battery charged. A dead drill battery and you're using the hand crank anyway.
I saw a guy using the drill the other day- the drill battery was low or the drill was weak because he was working the whole drill back and forth like a ratchet. He would have gotten it done faster with the hand crank.
Airstreams have half the ground clearance of sobs and the jacks go down faster.
Airstreams are already storage challenged and the hand crank stores easier than all that other stuff.

my 18v makita with lithium ion batteries...and I keep a spare...I used to struggle with an older craftsman regular type cordless drill...it was terrible...now it is unbelievably reliable and holds charge for a LONG time....never run out of battery when I need it and when I do I got 2nd battery...when one starts running low, I charge the other...and on setting "2" - it is very very fast

But I get your point...keep it simple...I will be bringing my drill with me...probably my favorite tool either way....worst case I blew 2 bucks...

Two group 27's are now waiting for installation. I was going to go with AGM batteries, but the Kirkland batteries at Costco were roughly a third the price of AGMs.

I notice a bit of rust in the battery box. Anyone have great suggestions to keep that from reoccurring? I'm going to clean it up, and put a couple of coats of Rustoleum in there. I'd like to find some kind of a thin perforated mat that would allow water to get out from under the batteries and either drain or evaporate. Feel free to send a PM if you have a good idea.

When I removed the old batteries, I found a neat plastic tray in the bottom of the battery box, so I exchanged the group 27s for group 24s. I would have liked the extra AH's, but liked the tray even better. It keeps the batteries from shifting inside the box. Maybe with a bit of luck, the sun will shine (rainy here today), and the solar panel will top it off nicely. I got them in too late for it to have much of a chance.

We are always tripping over things by the door (dog leashes, shoes, etc.), so we picked up a couple of wire baskets to hang from the screen door. I think they were a couple of bucks each at Fred Meyer's (Kroger). I put a strip of padding across the back so they don't rattle and/or mar the screen door.

Switz, You say,the kill-a-wat electricity usage meter will also serve to inform the operator how long the inverter (if installed) can run the various items.
How does that work? I think it would be very useful but I do not understand how to use it or how it works.

If you know how many watts a thing actually consumes while running (from the Kill-A-Watt), you can calculate what it will demand from the inverter. If you know the inverter's rated efficiency and your the amp-hour capacity of your battery, you can get a pretty good estimate of how long your batteries will last based on what you're using.

Life in Stainless Steel

Really like both the door baskets and the static cling numbers, have them earmarked for future reference.

At Ikea the other day and picked up some nice little Salt and Pepper Shakers. Interesting how you mind browses differently once you have in incurable case of Aluminum Fever.
