What Are the Mattresses on Recent Models Like?

"Too hard" is an often-heard complaint (on older Airstreams).

Am wondering if this has prevailed with the newer models?

I have always slept well on my 2010 mattress, but it has been feeling a little "hard" lately. No doubt from compression over the years. I remedied the situation by putting an extra comforter between the mattress and heated mattress pad. Slept like a proverbial baby last night. Warm and comfy as the rain pelted the roof. Nirvana. (And please Lord, when my time comes, this is the way I want to die. In my beloved FaN, snuggled down, with the rain on the roof.)

Anyway, am just curious about those newer mattresses.

After our first 6 nights in a 2017 FC, I would say soft. Comfortable and I slept great, but softer than our mattress at home.

Good to hear, Matt.

Sweet dreams!

Fly At Night --

I am scheduled into service at Jackson Center next Monday/Tuesday. Part of what I plan on doing is checking out the new stock, and "enhanced stock" mattresses in the showroom shop to replace the stock on in my 2011 Serenity 28. I'll be sure to reply back here with my observations.

btw, slight tangent - can you comment on the heated mattress pad you use? brand/where found?

It's like buying a hamburger. You start out with bread and meat and then add condiments to taste. We sleep on the factory mattress with a 3" memory foam pad and a 100% cotton mattress pad. For us, it is perfect.

I have always found old mattresses to get soft and mushy with age and then hurt my back.
If your looking for a new mattress get the dimensions from Airstream and have one custom made. My sister did this in her trailer and got an awesome mattress.

I cheaped out and cut down a quality memory foam mattress. It does ok for the limited time I get to camp but I would rather have a real mattress.

We really like the queen sized mattress on our 2016 Classic.

We have a 2015 FC. The mattress is too hard. We put a memorie foam topper on it and now it's fine. Not perfect, but good enough.

The stock mattress on our 2016 Classic was a bit too "springy" for us. Luckily, we met the team at Hulabed as we've been driving around the US & Canada this year and they cut one of their memory foam mattresses to fit into our Airstream.

IT. IS. AWESOME.

We are quite pleased with the mattress in our 2017 Intl. Serenity 27FB. The mattress pad and sheets were ordered from ABLifestyles online. Again, we're very happy with their quality and their customer service. They have a fitted-at-the-bottom as well as standard flat top sheets. Not knowing what we'd like I ordered both. Surprisingly, we like the fitted top sheet. It stays in place but does not feel restricting.

My wife and I added a memory foam pillowtop cover (3") to the top of our 2017 mattresses. The new mattresses were a little too firm for us. Perfect now!

FWIW, we have a late in the year 2013 International and have been pretty pleased with the factory mattress so far (probably about 300 nights on it). When we ordered our trailer, I talked to our dealer about getting a custom made mattress. He said that the worked through a local mattress company and many of their customers got one built when they purchased their Airstreams. At that time, he said he had just gotten word that Airstream did a mid model year change to the 2013's and were doing a better quality mattress. He recommended that we give it a try before doing a custom one which we did. Again, we have been pleased but I don't know if Airstream has made subsequent changes since then.

Yah, I would say about the same. Maybe not as soft as my home bed, but still, very comfortable and a good night's rest for us.
The 30' FC's North-South bed is a lot easier to get in/out of, than the 25' FC's East-West bed. What a difference.

We also have a 26u with twins and really like the mattresses. Even more after I added 3" to the width of the mattress support so the mattresses don't try to slide off all the time.

The stock mattresses in new Airstreams are pretty low quality. They are just single density polypropylene foam. Probably cost Airstream less than $100 a mattress to source.

I threw mine out and bought a natural Tallalay latex foundation with tufted down topper as replacement and custom layered it to fit the back riser. Cost about $1200.

The mattress in my 2011 20' FC is too firm. I added a 1 1/2" memory foam topper and cut it to shape. I also bought a twin size topper for when I convert the dinette into a bed.

The best place to store the dinette topper is, of course, on top of the other topper on the mattress for a VERY comfy total of 3". BTW, the best prices can be had just after the college students go back to school. Target usually discounts them in early Sept.
