Walmart RV'ers Attacked... Kill Intruder

Motor Home Travelers Attacked In Walmart Parking Lot Sue Company

Back in 2006, a Florida couple parked an RV in a Utah Walmart and shot and killed an intruder. Now the couple is suing Walmart, saying the company knew the creep was lurking about but didn't alert authorities, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

The couple, which says Walmart failed to call police despite being told by customers the guy was causing mayhem earlier that day, wants Walmart to cough up medical and legal costs, as well as general damages.
No charges were filed in the shooting, in which the couple said the attacker forced his way inside the motor home then wrestled the travelers for control of the shotgun they used to kill him.

Sad but True - this will happen very fast - and I always found them to be a nice place to park for short term rest stops.

This happened in 4 years ago - why do you think there'll likely be further policy changes now?

In Lubbock TX, a new Wally World opened near the intersection of 4th Street (now the Marsha Sharp Freeway) and Avenue Q.

This is the approximate intersection of the Barrio to the North of the freeway, the Ghetto to the East of downtown and all the homeless population near downtown, and Texas Tech University new student apartment complexes.
Therefore this Wal-Mart is likely to have ANYONE in it or around it at any time of the day or night....Tech student, local Hispanic or Black, homeless, or people in an RV....and PANHANDLERS.

Since I live north of Lubbock about 20 miles from this Wal Mart, it is the closest one to my home, and I have been in this store at various times on a frequent basis. When the store first opened, you could be afronted by PANHANDLERS at any time, day or night.
EVERY time it happened, I told the panhandler I only carry plastic....and walked away...straight to a MANAGER inside where I reported the physical description of the vagrant and complained that surely they did not want customers to feel unsafe shopping there by being approached by panhandlers in the parking lot.
I further encouraged EVERYONE I know to complain to management about being panhandled at Wal-Mart.
Wal-Mart now has a car with a yellow blinking light on it patrolling this parking lot at night, and occasionally during the day...and the panhandling has pretty much gone to zero.
However, local law enforcement often advise RV'ers who pull in with intent to overnight, that they may want to relocate to a different Wal-Mart in another part of town.
It always pays to be aware of your surroundings.

Having "corporate" Walmart aware of what is happening in a legal sense will force all of the store to "comply" with their rules. I feel, with very little hard evidence on the matter, that RV overnights in the parking lots of many WalMarts has been more of a local "it's ok as long as nothing happens" policy. Now that there is a legal issue, corporate will come down hard on this for all of their locations.

Sad, but I feel it's going to be a knee jerk reaction to a probably one time event. I have stayed in several Walmart parking lots for quick overnights. Always alone, my wife won't have it. Door wide open to circulate the air, never a thought of something bad happening. I never unhook my truck. Of course I chose my Walmarts carefully, different locations have various localized issues. It's not all that hard to see if you look. A Walmart near Nashville was like a resort, deli was great, people were very nice - I planned on using that location again - but I bet with this it will be out of the question.

Ah, I gotcha - due to the lawsuit. You're right, that usually stiffens up a policy quicker than a little blue pill.

Hi, Last year or was it the year before? In St. George, Utah there were signs stating [in the Wal-mart parking lot] "No overnight parking" so we hit the road. We have never spent the night in a Wal-Mart parking lot; The two that we planned on staying at, both had signs. We asked at a third Wal-Mart and they said maybe it's OK, but there were too many strange looking people hanging out in the parking lot so we left there too.
