USAF Aircraft and Munitions Maintenance Officer, 1972 - 1985. The only one I knew that actually had a degree in Aircraft Maintenance.

Of course that was back when most everybody was a vet. Or at least had a draft lottery number.

Were you an instructor at Keesler in 87? I too was a former 30474. Shortly after they changed the AFSC to 2E173 and now I think it is something else. But, I also cross trained and became a Radio Operator 3C173 since I was already and Extra Class Amateur Radio Operator. I bypassed the initial school and simply did the CDCs for 5 level and the 7 level school. Easy. I ultimately retired as a 41A3 MSC Officer, but I spent my first 20 years enlisted between the Marine Corps and Air National Guard. The last 11 was AF Reserve as a Mustang.

I enlisted as a WAC in Jan 1978, the Woman’s Army Corp was disbanded while I was in basic training at Ft McClellan and I graduated basic training into the US Army.
Served as the first woman in an infantry brigade at Ft Lewis. The reception center thought there was a mistake on my orders. Transferred to Ft Wainwright ,AK. Honorable Discharcharge.

My husband served 21 years. Infantry. 11B.
Ft Wainwright,AK
Ft Lewis, WA
Ft Wainwright, AK
Ft Riley, KS
Wightman NCO Academy Korea
Ft Carson , Co
Ft Dix, NJ
Schofield Barrcks, HI
Ft Riley, KS

On another string - when we entered the Army (1978 & 1976) we couldn’t stop anywhere in uniform. We had to go directly to work or home, No stopping for milk, gas, etc. Big difference now. Soldiers go out to eat, shop, etc in BDUs.

Ft McClellan AL, I think I still have a couple of T- Shirts and socks with that rich deep red dirt ingrained in them from 1984.

And, just to add to the fun, today is the 243rd birthday of the US Army, which is older by about a year, than the actual United States of America.

This is a point I brought up at our morning meeting (Army Hospital IT department), and most of the ex-Army gang had missed noticing it.

The real irony (and really delicious) was that me, the tired old ex-NAVY guy, was the one that reminded the assembled multitude about the significance of the date.....

And on the heels of the Army's Birthday, we now have the creation of the United States Space Force.

So we now have:

The United States Marine Corps "Semper Fidelis!"
The United States Navy "Not for Self, but Country"
The United States Army ( GO ARMY!) "This We'll Defend"
The United States Coast Guard "Semper Paratus"
The United States Air Force "Hey dude, where's the Starbucks"

And now......The United States Space Force. It just sounds kinda weird. Maybe they'll come up with a better name.

I wonder what they will call the first Chief Of Staff of the Space Force?

Chief of Space Operations?
Chief Space Cadet?

Maybe they can call Buzz Aldrin back out of retirement to be the first CSO. After all, he's actually been to space.

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, I remain your humble servant.....etc, etc...etc...

Jim
