..Sir, have you ever heard of Kentucky windage .
Corpsman Miller, UP. US Navy. 1971 through 1975 Stationed aboard the USS Kawishiwi AO-146. I was also a Commissaryman (cook) aboard ship. The Navy found out I could cook and sent me to the fleet (fleet was short of cooks) rather than the helicopter medi-vac unit I was slated for. Probably saved my butt. Besides, we had a few other 'professional' cooks on board and we wound up winning the fleet-wide 'Ney Award' for best chow in the fleet. Three 'tours' of Viet Nam; two during the war and one bringing refugees out during the Fall of Saigon. Pearl Harbor was my home port. Subic Bay, Phillippines was my home 'foreign' port. WELCOME HOME to all the other Vets. Mine was a spit in the face by some ignorant protester calling me a baby-killer as I walked through the airport. He hadn't regained conciousness by the time Security let me catch my flight home! My oldest son just got out of the Marine Corps after a couple tours of Iraq. My oldest daughter is still in the Marine Corps and getting ready to head back to Iraq area for the second time. Four more kids at home who are either not of military age or have any military interest! God Bless America. Tom
Hello Norbert. Hey, lumpia, baloots and pancit were part of the three major food groups over there! Not to mention rice and fish heads. Remember the Olongopo River and all the little kids swimming in it or sitting in IBGB's, begging for peso's? How about the fresh coconut milk from coconuts peeled from their husk and shell, then wrapped in plastic with a straw in it? Do jeepnies and the Victory Liners ring a bell? Remember the alligator (or was it a little crocodile) in front of one of the hotels, where hardened Viet Nam vets on R&R could not bring themselves to throw in a little duckling they bought to feed the reptile? I saw many a marine trying to smuggle a little duckling through the Main Gate, only to get caught by its quacking somewhere deep in a pocket! Then there were all the different country/western bars; in fact, just all the different types of bars available. And Jolo's. And the street vendors selling bar-b-qued rat, cat, monkey, dog, sometimes beef, or what ever they caught recently. And the hotels and young ladies. And all the little beer bottle trinkets with sayings like..."Fighter by day, Lover by night, Drunkard by choice, Navy by mistake". What a change for a good Catholic alter/choir boy having grown up in a wealthy Chicago suburb and then winding up in the 'armpit of the Orient'. Man. So long ago, yet feels like yesterday! Tom
ahhh...yes , my one functioning brain cell does remember....we called it s**t river.....i drank san magu not coconut milk.... i ate at papa gallos(i think that was it)......and we(photomates) hung out at an infamous bar (turn right when the main drag ends at the t street)...cant remember the name though....i remember the girls saying " i love you no s**t joe, buy me honda"......." if youre going to san prancisco....be sure to wear some plowers in your hair"......

6 years in the US Navy Active. No action, but I did get to fire a missile and shoot 76mm rounds at Vieques Island before they closed the range. We also managed to get the sixth largest Cocaine bust in maritime history during Counter Drug Ops Deployment. We confiscated SIX TONS of 100% pure Cocaine. Cut street value was estimated at $800 Million.
