There won't be a policy for salute unless they make it our National Anthem.

My vote for a GREAT song......I'm perfectly happy with our NA.

Is it such a bad thing if ones salutes during the singing of God Bless America. It sure as heck better then burning or walking on our Flag.

No, not a bad thing, just not normally done. Burning the flag is how a flag is retired, but I know you mean burning as disrespecting our country.

I did mean in disrespecting our flag. As to retiring our Flag burning is one way of retiring the Flag, however, it is acceptable to bury the Flag in lieu of burning.

Do you have a resource for that? The U.S. flag code 8-K says "The flag, when it is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning".
Since code 8-B says "The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise" I am pretty sure you cannot bury it. Besides, 8-K clearly states "destroyed".

There is a lot on the web regarding how to properly retire the American Flag. As the code states preferred method is to burn it, but if you are unable to burn the flag as a means of disposal, burying the flag is also acceptable. To do so in a respectful manner, it is required that you begin by folding the traditional triangle fold (see link above) and place it in a sturdy wooden box before burial. After burying the flag, you may wish to indicate the burial location with a small marker of some sort, preferably of wood or stone to give it some degree of permanence. I took this from the Lady Liberty Flag site ( there are others that also address burying the flag) as it was the most definitive on how to do it. There are other sites that give a number of other options to include recyling the Flag.
Bottom line to me is if you retire a flag do it with dignity.

To properly dispose of a flag you can usually give it to your local fire department or Boy Scout Troop. Both have formal flag disposal events.

Yes! Please bring your flags to your local Boy Scout Troop! Flags are retired regularly by Boy Scouts in a very dignified ceremony. I was in Boy Scouting for 20 years, I spent the last four years as an Asst Scoutmaster and Camp Commissioner. During Summer Camps, American Flags are retired at every Friday Campfire before Scouts retire for the evening. It's a very moving ceremony, and Veterans are called to stand on stage.
San Diego has a Scout camp in the city, Camp Balboa, where Cub Scout Day Camps are held all summer, only cotton flags can be retired there. But in the Mountains at Camp Mataguay, both nylon and cotton flags can be retired. During off season, a supply of flags to be retired are kept at each camp, so that Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs may retire them in ceremony during their stay at camp. I imagine that this is the same in every Boy Scout Council.

There are three ways to retire an American Flag, all three require burning.
I did do some searching to see if burying was an answer. The closest I could come was, anything was ok as long as it was dignified. I really struggle with burial being acceptable I guess. I won't even be buried, I'm going to be cremated like my father before me. I like the idea of Old Glory's ashes able to fly free on the wind, just like our wild and free American Spirit.

1st post was my AS forum intro.
2nd post is here.
Semper Fi to all my Marine Corps brothers and a warm hello to every one who has served our great country.
I spent four years in the Marines from 89-93. My primary MOS was 0352 TOW missile gunner. I was fortunate enough to spend a year at Camp Schwab Okinawa. I am a Persian Gulf war veteran and while i was "boots on the ground" i never saw combat. Most of my time though was used up as a scout for 1st Light Armoured Recon at Camp Pendleton. I was also on West PAC 92 with the USS Fort Fisher.
Long time since then and many changes in my life but i seem to always find friendly faces on the veterans threads.
So here I am.

Welcome Joe! Camp Pendleton is just about at our front door as we live in Vista and face those Mountains and Hills. Often we go to sleep with everything shaking and rumbling. We sure don't miss that when we are on the road.

Buddy Check 22
a Facebook event
"BUDDY CHECK 22 is a day to call a veteran that you know and check in on them. This will hopefully change the fact that 22 23 veterans a day commit suicide. The best part... You don't have to go ANYWHERE. Invite your friends, have them invite their friends; we can grow it and be a part of something that may just save a life. Maybe it's 2 minutes out of your day, (but please don't put a timer on when you make that call, or text or chat); every veteran deserves to know that we still care about them."
My new friends, I am inviting all of you. Many young men and women have come back, and are still coming back, with more than missing limbs and TBIs. The government is letting them down, but we are their brothers and sisters and we are not going to let them down. We are going to offer them a hand, we can lift them. And we can do this until the number is 0

My Dad worked for Sikorsky 1959 to 1968 as a Mechanic; so if you ever managed to fly in a Jolly Green Giant during those years and for a few years afterwards, you may very well have flown in something he helped to build.

Happy Birthday USMC!!! Been to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island three times (2-sons, 1-daughter). We thank God every day that there are still some in our country that are willing to raise their right hand and pledge to defend our freedoms!!!
