I wroe this on Veteran's Day in honor of my family. I know today is Veteran's day, a day in which we honor those who serve, however, we should not forget the families of our Veterans. They also served. Maybe not in combat but they were with us all the way. They worried about us, moved with us and stayed home when we deployed. Our mothers and our wives may not have openly shared their concerns about if we would return because in their hearts they knew we would. Unfortuately not all did leaving families to grieve their lost love ones. Even our children served. They moved with us, leaving friends behind, to foreign lands with diffferent cultures, new school with different curriculums and to make new friends. As Claire says our children may not know how to ride a bike on a buzy street but they could get through customs in any country. It is unfortunate that I have no photos of my Dad in my album a Navy veteran of WW II and a real hero in my eyes.
So please do not forget the Veteran's family. In my eyes they are also heroes.

I have never and will never forget the things that my family went through for me! They did so much for me and supported me through all of it including the nightmares the paranoid moments the depression and not to mention the deployments the transfers the endless training cycles and celebrated with me at my retirement! They are so special and yes when you need to be accepted by your 6 and 4 year old they did. Now they are 33 and 31 and we have 6 grandchildren!

McDave, i was with Golf, 2/26, 5th Div. We were attached to the 3rd Div when i got there in Oct 66, loaned out to the 1st Div in Jan 67, then back to the 3rd until the 5th Headquarters finally arrived in country. I think we did one or two operations with 2/9.

Hi Terry. I came over with the battalion from Camp Pendleton. It was 1/5 of the 1st Mar Div in Pendleton, and then became 2/9 of the 3rd Mar Div. We landed in Da Nang in mid-'65, after doing some training in Okinawa. I think we were the second regular Marine battalion to be sent to Vietnam, after 3/3 that operated to the south of us out of Chu Lai. I started as a 3.5 rocket gunner, then transitioned to 60mm mortars after they decided that 3.5's were not useful in Vietnam, and finally ended up as a FO for 81's. We fought as a unit for a while, but then when they established the 13 month rotation policy, they split us up so we wouldn't all be going home at the same time. When we first got to Vietnam, there was no rotation policy, and we were wondering if we were going to be there for the duration, like the guys in WWII, which would have been a long time!

Hi McDave, when you became 2/9, was your company commander's name Jerry McDourty, by any chance? (I'm not sure about the spelling of his last name.)

We did an operation down around Chu Lai once. Can't remember the name of it, but remember the operation well because it was our first one after they took away our M-14s and replaced them with M-16s. We lost a buncha guys at Chu Lai because of that stupid decision. Mine jammed after firing the first round. Threw it down in disgust. Had to steal the one off my fireteam leader's body after he went down. Carried it the rest of the time I was there. The armory tried to make me pay for my lost M-16 when i rotated home.

We picked a new company commander just before we left the US. He was an older guy (which in those days could have meant he was in his 30's). Don't remember his name. Later we got one named Lawrence, who we called, of course, Lawrence of the Nam.

Best Commanders' name I ever had was "Dollarhide". 'Course we all called him Capn Buckskin.

I took basic at Ft Knox in '66, our DI was Sgt Dew and the DI for the next barracks was Sgt Daw; Dew-Daw, Dew-Daw

Both were old guys, in their late 20s or early 30s, but very nice. They always insisted we called them by their first name; Sargent

For 8 weeks they took care of us, especially Sgt Dew. He let us know when there was going to be a surprise formation at 2 AM so we'd fall in formation fully dressed while the others were shivering in their BVDs in the Kentucky February cold.
CO> Looks like some soldiers got advance notice of this formation!
DEW> An informed soldier is a good soldier, sir!

I think of him quite often as I grow older. He was a good DI and friend.

Hats off and bottoms up to you Sgt Dew.

Ft Knox

Richw46
I started basic training at Fort Knox the first week of March in 1966.
One of the DI's for my platoon had broken his hand in a bar fight. He couldn't show us the manual of arms because he couldn't hold the rifle in his right hand.

Did you have to sleep with the windows open top and bottom because of the ( I believe hepatitis) scare? Damp and drafty is what I remember.
