Wow, was I ever that young? Sooooo long ago, a lot of water under the bridge since those years.

It's hard to believe that the time has passed so quickly. There was worse places to be in Vietnam than Vung Tau. I was there part of '67, '68, and '69 on the USS Tutuila ARG 4. We were small boat repair for the river and coastal squadrons.

Actually, it was about the best. I think I used up a lot of my life's luck be getting assigned there. I had a critical MOS (aircraft armament) and although I was originally assigned to the Big Red 1, which I think was in Cambodia, I got rerouted to Vung Tau. The guy that processed me into the company said I was one lucky, uh, son.

Still, I was happy to get home and work in a convenience store, where we got held up once and another time was threatened to be shot by a customer because I caught him shoplifting.

Veterans Fall In!

God bless our troops in uniform now and thanks for the veterans. When I was stationed in Hawaii, the Arizona Memorial was not built yet. There was a small liberty boat that would take people out to see the Arizona and at that time the gun turrets were still there and could be seen above the waterline.
Say a prayer for all on Memorial Day.

Veterans Fall In!

I just finished re-reading Gen John Kelly USMC Memorial Day speech presented in San Antonio last year http://www.southcom.mil/newsroom/Pag...ay-Speech.aspx He has the words and the license. May we all remember on this Memorial Day.

Born in a Naval Hospital (Dad was a career Submariner), I served in US Army Military Police (95B20) 1973-76 (including a tour in ROK). Both daughters are now serving in the Army Reserve (one did a year in Iraq with The First Team) and my son-in-law served as a Marine in the Battle of Fallujah and as a soldier in Afghanistan (and he is still an active duty Paratrooper). I guess service is in our blood.

I have developed a profound respect for our young warriors.

Didnt go overseas only because of a early marriage (now history), had real good times, (some I cant remember) and (some I dont want to remember). Anyways, all kids should go in and get straightened out, it sure helped me.

"Fobbits", I love that term, even if I was one.

FYI Fobbit = Forward Operation Base (FOB) + hobbit. Meaning all us folks who were in a FOB, but never left it until we came home. :-)

Ok, I'll bring up the rear here. SFC US Army 1986-2004. Fort Bliss, Camp Casey 2d ID Korea, Fort Jackson, USAHSC Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

All duty assignments were hospitals except Korea, where I learned more about camping out than I'd ever imagined (or wanted). A few trips to the middle east but nothing to brag about, it was the war of surrendering and free hernia surgeries for the 'prisoners'.
