Silver Buffalo

Some years back I went out to a western ranch with the intent of shooting a record book Buffalo, I was in the hunting business as a manufacturers representative for many years and putting my name in the books appealled to me. Archery being my choice in hunting I had worked hard getting ready for this hunt with a specially heavy bow and custom arrows.

When I got there, I saw the bull from a long distance feeding by itself in the evening and was ready for the morning stalk and after hunting all over the USA successfully, was ready. Morning came and there was a cold but light snow and when I had located the herd, was able to distiguish the bull I was entitled to take from the younger, more vigorous bulls, as the old one while still the Alpha bull had stopped breeding and was therefore to be harvested so that the younger bulls could do their thing to maintain the herd quality.

The herd had all circled up with a lot of silvery frost and snow glittering on their backs actualy looked through watery eyes to be an Airstream rally much like those I had seen on TV! I slipped in and the old bull was not much sport , more like a cow hunt, so I passed it up and left it alone.

It was the first time I had done something like that after a long anticipated and planned trip, so it stuck with me for life and when I got my Airstream it looked just like that old bull standing with all those white sob units and reminded me of that non-hunt and the name Silver Buffalo obviously seemed just right as a name for my 1984 Classic Motorhome.

Watching all those 50/60s Airstram caravans on TV with my Dad years before had shaped that image of the uniqueness and herding instinct of Airstreamers.

I carry Buffalo nickels to give to occasionally interested folks who stop and like the unit for good luck. I believe in all the luck I can get, being of Irish immigrants. It worked for that old bull with me and I am kind of one of those big old bulls now myself, so I guess I can use all the luck I can get......jem

Thanx for the memories.
Just the mention of the Buffalo nickel gave me pause. My Daddy had a 'slide' tie...& his 'slide' was a 1939 Buffalo Nickel... and he, being Scot-Irish...Carter/Anderson/McCue (Anderson is Scot)...
he wore a Pendleton shirt in the Anderson Clan Tartan, and a solid Red wool cardigan sweater over that; and of course, the 'String Tie' with the Buffalo Nickel Slide showing at the collar of the Pendleton shirt.

& a Bag-Piper played "I'll Take You Home Again, Cathleen", just as he was laid to rest... just-as I had last "viewed" him (with his Silver Buffalo Nickel).

Sorry...I didn't mean to bore anyone...just piqued my sweet memory of my sweet Daddy.

The hunting partners call mine "Chicken Coop". A hunting group next to ours 15 years ago came over to our fire to introduce themselves. I was in the middle of grilling marinated chicken breasts over a hickory wood fire. As I looked up, one of the chicken breasts fell into the fire. I retrieved it, washed it off, seasoned it and put it back on the grill where it promptly fell back into the fire. Everyone was laughing so hard they never caught my real name. They call me "Chicken Man" to this day so "Chicken Coop" seemed appropriate according to them. Their group of 5 hunters merged with our group and we hunt together to this day. We have even gone on fishing and camping trips together.

When my wife first saw our 1970 Caravel she called it a "silver turd". Luckily she came around and likes it now. I'm glad that the name didn't stick !

Hey Craig

I've been around...just on different "Forums" I guess.. nice to know I've been missed.

It's ok...I was just being funny. My holidays were Great actually...not much in the way of the traditional Christmas tinsel et al...but lots of snow, good & NEW friends, good food, & warm cozy nights. HOW CAN ANYONE COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT?!!

If I was complaining, (i WASN'T REALLY) I can't now...because my No. ONE 'resolution' was NO COMPLAINING!
No matter what. >>>remember...we could be digging through rubble in Bam, Iran!

Seriously, tho' I just said it because it seemed to fit. Nice to get a "heads up" from you Craig.

HAPPY & SAFE NEW YEAR EVERYONE.
