Sandy Lee,
May not be enough tow capacity It’s all about gear ratio with the Ram. Check out the new Ford 150 diesel too.

Oops, misread the post. I have a 27’, would go with a 3/4 ton Hemi or diesel if you want a Ram. Some on here tow with the Ecodiesel; I test drove it and compared with our company fleet Hemi 1500 and it was short on power for my tastes.

I have to be able to hit 70mph or better at the bottom of the merge ramp from 8 mile to I-94 while towing. That’s my test. My Ram does it.

Presuming that the Ram 1500 with Eco-Diesel has the trailer towing package, it should have no problem with the Airstream found in your profile. That coach, when fully loaded for a trip likely weighs in the vicinity of 4,000 pounds. Even without the heaviest trailer tow package, said truck may have sufficient rating -- my usual suggestion is to multiply your coach's max weight by 1.5 and use that as a shopping point for tow vehicle weight rating.

Good luck with your investigation!

Not sure why a diesel with that trailer? Costs a lot more to operate than a gas TV. Payload on the RAM 1500's is typically pretty low, unless you special order. When I looked recently, the local dealer was still recommending against the Ecodiesel; pushed me toward the Hemi; and again, payload came into play...but I was looking at pulling a larger AS. I would look at the 6.2 GM or the F150 Echoboost. Good luck.

Not that I'm at all cynical about auto dealers, but how many HEMI vs. Ecodiesel units did that dealer have in inventory? (And if you wonder if I care about Ecodiesel vs HEMI, note that I tow with an Ecoboost... I just figure car salesmen are always trying to take my money because that's how they make it THEIR money.)

Actually, we never talked about his Hemi vs Ecodiesel inventory...nothing he had in 1/2T offered larger then 1200lb payload...he was pushing me toward 3/4T at the time... I got the impression from our discussion that they were still not pushing the Ecodiesel at the time with this dealer. I loved my Echoboost for the 5 years I owned. would get another F150 EB if we go down in size to another 25...they just need to change the lounge to one like the 26...or like this below...then, I could convince the wife!

My wife and I just got a 2019 Ram 1500. We special ordered it to maximize payload. Nobody could really say what the payload sticker on the door would say, until we got it. It says 1750lb. In case you’re interested, it’s a Quad Cab (Crew adds extra lbs) with 18” wheels (20” add lbs) - and nothing else extra (no running boards, no sunroof, etc) . Any extras you add decrease payload. We’re really happy with the 1750lbs we’ve got. Oh, it’s a Hemy 5.7 without the eTorque, has the 3.91 transmission ratio. It’s specced for 11500lb of pull. We get 14.5 MPG combined (city and highway - we live in Washington State). Hich receiver is rated to 1200lb I believe. Airstream is next, perhaps next summer. 😊

Thanks for that...nice payload and I am sure it's a great truck you will enjoy driving/pulling your AS! Would match nicely with a 25' or 26' AS...is that what your thinking?

Welcome Aboard!! 👍

My thoughts...an oil burner was not needed for our
'63 22' many moons ago, I doubt one's needed now. 👍

Yes! The 25FB is what we’re looking for. If we can make it so the tongue weight does not go over 1000 lb. 😊

You should be fine. Make sure you get a good WDH; lots of opinions on this...I am partial to the Blue Ox SwayPro...used it for my last 2 25' AS's and now using it for my 28' FC Twin...no complaints at all.

as previously stated elsewhere...

...payload, payload, payload. Our 27FB was supposed to have a tongue weight of about 800. Actual, conservatively loaded for weekend camping = 1100. Truck payload sticker is 1560. 460 remaining pounds for passengers and stuff put us over right quick. Worst news was hitting the scales. The 460 available turned into about 320. Let's see: wife, dog grandkids, generator.... ain't happenin. Lot's of pull capacity, but axles/bearings payload limitations were the limiting factors.

I would have saved a ton of $$$ had I seen the actuals rather than the brochures. Good news, I ended up with two trucks! And my banker loves me.

TW is a target that is hard to hit...our factory target is 860. 😂

Wow, that’s a heavy tongue.

The airstream manual I found online for a 25FB says this: “The tongue weight should be approximately 10 to 15% of the trailer’s total weight, but must not exceed 1,000 lb.” For a 7700lb max trailer weight, your 1200 lb is right at 15% but it exceed those 1000lb. I’ve seen others post similar weights, but aren’t you concerned that you’re over the recomended limit by 200lb?

anxiously awaiting an informed answer...

...here is hoping the manual reference "...must not exceed 1000 pounds..." is about the hitch on the TV. Many TV hitches are indeed limited to 1000lb tongue weight. Many half ton pickup factory hitches, for example.

But I can't imagine the manufacturer of Airstream trailer frames dreams that their tongue will not be subjected to tongue weights far in excess of 1000lbs.

Anyone?

What you see in my photo is un-hitched tongue weight, with WD set the receiver weight is closer to 880.
The problem with the Airstream statement...they don't specify what exactly your "exceeding"...frame, coupler, monocoque, receiver, TV.😳
So...No, not very after 15yrs on the road.

Something else to contemplate...AS installed two 3500lb axles on a trailer they spec'd at 7300lb GVWR
Seems numbers are very flexible at JC.

I found this point interesting too when I researched weights before I selected my new axles.
Airstream must figure that there will always be at least 10% of the GVWR as tongue weight so the axles should never see full capacity.
My trailer GVWR is 8,300 lbs. The most the axles have ever seen per the scale is 7,400 lbs (fully loaded - water, groceries, clothes, misc stuff). The original axles were 4,000 lb. I went ahead a and upped this 10% to 4,400 lb axles figuring that slightly more capacity will result in the trailer riding slightly higher when fully loaded. I also went with 32 degree down axle spec vs 22.5 degree down. A long, long time ago I remember Inland Andy saying that it was ok to go 10% to 15% over the factory axle spec without issue.
