Tires?

Anybody have preferences on tires? I'm outfitting a 2014 Onyx International 25FB. I know the size, but wondering if there is a better brand preference than others?

I'm still running 15" oem wheels on my 6,500# 2005 25' Airstream. After generally good wear (30-35K miles/set) from Goodyear Marathons, two Asian no-name sets, then an astounding 57K miles from a set of Carlisles (still Asian mfr), I've finally followed advice of good friends who advocate Maxxis 8008s. These are price competitive with the Carlisles I had, are also load range Es as everything I've run past 100K miles has been. Our only problems have been the occasional screw or nail punctures, seems like at least one in every set of tires.

Paid an extra $100 or so for road hazard insurance on Carlisles and indeed replaced a tire on their plan. But could instead of "self-insured" by paying $100 less and buying the tire ourselves.

We’ve just gone to Goodyear Endurance from the 2013 GY Marathons. Load range E tires, rated for higher speeds (that I don’t drive at).

Lots of data on here, if you research past posts. I have used Michelin LTX 15" on past 4 AS's I've owned. I switched out the OEM Marathons...no issues with my Michelin's. Do the same with my TV.

The best pizza is from the closest pizza shop to you. .... When you are very hungry!! The best tire is anyone thatwill fit if you are broken down in the middle of nowhere!

Search AF threads for Nokians. For me it's the Nokians or GYE's (GoodYear Endurance) on the same 15" rim.

I would recommend getting tires specifically designed for trailers. That may “seem” to go against the “conventional” wisdom around here, but I’d rather stick to products specifically designed and manufactured for the purpose of moving trailers. But that’s me.

I have no idea what your knowledge base is with tires so I thought I'd go thru my education.



The first thread started by Ray and is the mother of all but needs IMO to be taken in context. It is full of great and very factual information and helped me immensely as a newbie. The swap from 15-16 rims which is the focus of this thread was necessitated by the needed ratings as the GYM’s were experiencing a lot of failure…load related, speed somewhat maybe… There weren’t many options until recently to get the weight ratings and stay with the 15” (Carlisle and Maxxi’s being the exceptions and IMO both have not had stellar reviews). What really needs to be remembered in this thread is that posters aren’t always clear re whether it’s a single or dual application and what their weight per tire is. So what works for X isn’t the answer for Y.

Recently two new tires appeared on the market. The Nokians Lt235/75R/15 116 LR E and the GY Endurance ST 225/75R/15 117 LR E. Both in the early stages have great reviews and excellent weight ratings per tire. I’m leaning to the Nokians but subject to them fitting in the spare rack. I’d be extremely happy with either.

In my instance the GYM’s were rated at 2540 lbs per tire and the max load per tire was 2500…not much margin, loose a little air....search for GYM tire failures for the outcome. Hence the search for a higher load rating.

After reading about the many tire failures with Goodyear Marathon tires I changed to Michelin defenders...I've done 4000 miles on them so far, and they handle very good ....I use them on my tow vehicle as well...It's a well built tire...

Michelins LTX have done me well over 4 AS's, and 2 TV's. Great ride, performance, and that is also what AS includes with the Classic still also:
Michelin LT225/75R16 Tires.

We have a 2014 25ft international and this year I will probably change out the GYM's although they are wearing perfectly. I will go with the new Goodyear Endurance.
