The reality is......

To most this will be overly obvious, but to the new folks out there, this might help shape your decsion in finding a trailer that is the right size for you.

Last night for laughs, while in the Bambi as I got it ready to take back home, I decided to measure the interior living space and compare it to what the specs say.

What I found is that a 19' Bambi has **approx** 15' 9" of interior space. But the specs have the '03 Bambi at a hair over 19'! True it is. Airstream like all other manufacs state the hitch to the bumper end. On the Bambi this equals about 3' of overall length I measured last night.

If the numbers follow, this would mean that a 22' unit has about 17' and a 25' unit about 22'. These are not exact numbers, your results may vary.

As you consider purchasing your coach, be it new or used, keep in mind that interior living space will be a bit less than the actual length of the coach.

I know this seems very basic to some, but as I took the readings last night, I was a bit taken back that the interior was only about 15' 9". I can't imagine what a 16' unit actually has in interior living space. Perhaps others beginning the process might consider this info before making a final selection.

The interior dimentions also vary by where you take the measurements. Unlike most RV's, an Airstream is wider and longer at the beltline than at the floor,

My measurements last night on the Bambi were from beltline in the back to beltline in the front. 15' 9" roughly.

Judging from the pictures, the new 16ft AS looks to have less interior room than my 17ft vintage. But what really matters to me is room to move around. The vintage unit has a long central hallway, so it's actually a couple steps to get from one end to the other. It's only a foot longer, but being laid out like that makes it seem roomier. Of course the new 16ft gets extra credit for having wrap around windows.

We haven't actually seen one in person. My husband loves the vintage AS so much he has no interest in swinging by the AS dealer when we're in the area. I'd just like to check out the new ones, but we all know what that can lead to (at least he knows, that's why he won't let me)!

Good point about the measurements. I realized that was how they measured them, but I never really thought about how much space was available inside.
