Smile South Texas Route Info

Anybody that has any info on the route from Van Horn Texas to Del Rio then North to Kerrville. We will be in the area first week in March. Info on RV parks, attractions, etc. would sure be appreciated. Our interests are
antiques, western history, horse stuff. Thanking you in advance. This is the old yuppie cowboy.

I haven't been through that part of the state in a long time, but Texas highways are almost always good roads. A map will get you a route that works. US 90 used to be a good way across that area, and it looks like it goes where you want to end up. Pay attention to the map scale and be prepared for the distances. Lots of miles, and miles, and miles.

Do fill up at every opportunity, because it can be a long way between gas stations out there. People are friendly, drivers wave at you as they pass, but don't expect too many of them.

Our state parks have fabulous campsites for reasonable prices. Check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission's website. Reservations can be hard to get on weekends, but there's almost always space available on weekdays. Lots of good parks in the Hill Country around Kerrville.

Good State Park camping at Ft. Davis with a restored Buffalo Soldiers' cavalry fort nearby and McDonald Observatory worth a stop for one of their Star Parties. A bit north of there, at Balmorhea State Park there's an awesome swimming pool build around a natural spring.

If you like spooky stuff that hasn't yet been explained, you can always look for the Marfa Lights. Scientists have said they're reflections of car lights in certain atmospheric conditions, but how come they were seen back in the 1880's? There's supposed to be a thriving artist's colony at Marfa, and probably a few antiques too.

Enjoy your visit.
