Thanks for posting that link and for this idea. For those who don’t need the pullout bed this is, I think, a better microwave solution than my pull-out shelf. It acccomodates a bigger microwave and gives more counter/storage space.

I’m not the cabinet maker you are so I’m going to build mine out of 80/20 Quickframe and use an Ikea countertop. I’ll post pictures in a few weeks when I’m done.

daleyocum,
How does the shelf “lock” in the closed position to ensure it does not bounce against the closed door (when traveling down the road)?
Regards,
Keith

The slides are the soft close variety so they have a slight tendency to want to stay put but it is vital that you put a couple sliding bolt latch or something classier on the door to keep it closed when traveling. I used a pair of these from McMaster. With these you need to cut slots in the closet frame for the latch to go into.

daleyocum,
Where did you locate a template to position the drill holes on the door and inside of cabinet?
Regards,
Keith

I just turned the door upside down, enlarged the big hole for the new hinge, and used those mounted hinges as the “template” for screwing them into the frame.

[QUOTE=daleyocum;2192892]We were obsessed with filling the whole lower portion of the closet with the Elfa drawer system and didn’t think about the trade offs that caused in microwave choices. Mounting it lower sure gives more options and would be better for shorter people or kids.

We also added Elfa 4-drawer system to the closet using high-strength velcro from HD. No holes needed, no screws and if we change trailers, the system goes with us (as it did from our 19'). We use those drawers a lot!

I finally got around to finishing my version of the cabinet ratch posted. This uses 80/20 quick frame and a butcher block top from Home Depot. It means you lose the pull-out bed under the TV but that’s not something we use anyway.

The nice thing about this is you get more storage space, a full size microwave, and kitchen prep counter space. With Quickframe it went together quickly.

I also just completed the hinge modification in my closet, and plan to install the Elfa shelf system. Worked pretty well, thanks for the instructions.

If anyone wants to do this mod, PM me. I accidently bought 6 hinges (they were in packs of 2 each). I'll give you my extras.
