I hope everyone is okay with this big artic storm we have had in the last few days. Yesterday it was 70 here and this morning we got up to 25 what a change. Just heard about all the ice and snow in other areas. Stay warm and be safe!

One Hundred Year Floods, and now Ten Year Snow! Oh, I know all you North Woodsmen and women and Rocky Mountaineers know about real snow, but for us, we only see it like this on rare occasions. Yesterday's storm was one of those times! After Thunder Snow during the night, we woke today to 15 inches generally and we are surrounded in our house by drifts of 40-45 inches with blowing snow forecast for afternoon and night. Will we get Gypsy plowed out for her appointment for service work at Bill Thomas by Monday? Can't worry about that now. Gotta go take my dogs out to play and w@#. Old Wally skirts around the very edge of the house where it's fairly light snow, but Moose, our GermanShorthair pup, bounds through it all. Joy! Who else is caught in this spectacular snow storm? May the power stay on and your refrig stay well stocked til you see the ground again! Enjoy and be safe. ~G

It was 71 here in Chatt Town at 6 this morning and it is supposed to be 40 by rush hour this afternoon. The rain has moved out, so I guess we won't be getting any snow (not like we ever get any anyway! ). Stay warm!

The wind here in Chattanooga this early AM was terrific. I heard some areas got gusts up to 65 mph. I'm headed to Holly Springs, MS near Memphis this afternoon and I'm not looking forward to the deep freeze plunge that is sweeping over us. Everyone bundle up out there.

We were at 70 last night and when the wind picked up there were a lot of trees downed. We don't expect to get above 35. There have been snow flurries all morning. I winterized the AS last night so hopefully all is well.
Stay warm

Ice with snow on the way here
All the area schools are closed, icy roads with snow on the way this afternoon. Our white pines are losing branches and each time the wind blows we can hear loud cracking noises even in the house, then thud and more branches on the ground. I am afraid its a matter of time before the power goes out with all the trees in the area losing branches...
Hope everyone is safe and warm too! Hang in there.

We are on the other end of the continent and we sure got hit. Vancouver, BC area (and Seattle) got hit big time starting last Saturday. We set new records for the amount of snow in November, total precipitation, and cold temperatures. With two storms coming in a day apart in an area that seldom gets much for snow we had over 2' in just under four days. Because we seldom get this kind of weather few people actually bother to put snow tires on their vehicles relying on the rain to wash it all away quickly, or mediocre all season tires. Lots of folks learned an expensive lesson this past week.
The bigger issue was the wind that came along with the heavy wet snow that took down trees and power lines. At some points well over 100,000 people were without power and some of them were down for four days.
It has warmed up significantly in the past day with temps almost back to normal for this time of year (mid 40's to 50's) and sun today and Saturday and then rain Sunday and into next week.
Good luck with your weather. We feel for you.

24 in the morning, 70 in the afternoon.
All you with "real" weather stay safe. Having no real experience with snow and ice on a long term basis, I have a great deal of respect for you all. (Or now that it's affecting the south - Y'all)

10" of snow and it is still snowing, no winds yet but with any luck they will pick up this afternoon. The best part of this storm is that we just signed a contract for snow removal last week.

Major ice storm with about 2-3 inches of sleet and ice covered with 3-5 inches of snow. Currently over 500,000 without power in the metro area at this time. My front yard Pin Oak tree's branches which usually are above my head are touching the ground. Good thing it's a good hardwood tree, no breakage yet. Wind is kicking up and the power outage grows as lines and tree limbs continue to snap from the ice weight. We need to get above freezing. Alas it's only 22 right now.

Holiday Party
Well, perhaps some of it will come our way! Hope everyone in the Mid-States are doing OK. Right now it is 62 here in CT with rain and thunderstorms later this evening. We are having our New England Unit WBCCI party this Sunday and it looks like the weather may hit us Sunday afternoon. They are being pretty quite about it right now. We have to drive 3 hours to get to the party and then of course back home. If it starts to snow maybe both Sandi and I will be designated drivers. I want to be a weatherman, what other job allows you to be right only 50% of the time and never have to worry about lossing your job?
Stay safe and warm!

Yep so far so good on power for me. A lot of that is due to building codes over the last 30 years which have forced utilities to go underground. We still are susceptible since main feeders to the subdivisions are above ground. From what I understand there are a lot of those feeders down at this time.
Apparently they have made a little progress. The outage numbers at this point are 499,495. This is going to take a long time to get things restored. I know our utility has a mutual aid pact with other companies but this storm was all over the state so who knows how many crews from other companies are available. From the summer storm the work crew with mutual aid was doubled, and it still took 2 weeks to get everyone back online. The problem is most utilities don't have the numbers of personnel as they did in the past. Things are run on the lean side and when a big storm passes through, staff is woefully short. I just don't remember storms in the past taking this much time to recover from.
