Skinny +short AS-which ones ?

Hi all.....

Well after sending my friend overseas the link to this Forum and the photo pages, He wants one !

But he wants a small one, and I got volunteered to help find it.

hopefully skinny enough that he can put it in his companies 40 ft container to ship it.(almost free for him)

Inside of the container is about 7 1/2 ft and it will need an inch or 2 each side.

Were the early Airstreams this skinny? what models / years to look for?

Also how tall are they ? We could remove the AC , etc for shipping

Anyone know of any of these "skinny" Airstreams for sale in Western USA?

I would guess the closest thing to a "skinny" A/S would be something like my Argosy Minuet. Just so happens mine is for sale, what a coincidence, eh? I can measure it if you like, I am not sure but possibly something real old, say 50's, in an A/S could possibly be skinny as well?

How wide were the Caravels? I am thinking they were 7'2, but I can't remember right now.

I am looking forward to seeing dimesions. I am not aware of an AS that will fit into a standard. shipping container.

Actually, you could be in luck... The Original Bambi Trailers(1960-1962) Were only 81" wide at the floor. When the trailer was redesigned for the 1963 Bambi II it became 86" wide. When they started building the Caravel model in 65 they became 89.5" wide.
(sounds like what is happening with compact cars every year...a inch longer here, an inch wider there.)

The bad news is the escalating prices for a Bambi. Fifteen years ago I purchased one for $600. Sold it a few years later for "only" $1000! Wish I could go back to those years!

By the way, the original Bambi was actually exactly 16' long overall. They only weighed empty 1850 lbs with a hitch weight of 180 lbs.

Last concern is height. Airstream wasn't too concerned with that number in the 60's and generally failed to include it in thier specs, however the Bambi was about 7'2" tall (without an A/C- they didn't even offer one as a factory option in 60.

containers are 8ft 8 1/2 and 9 1/2

were Pacers , bubbles and early globetrotters(same years as first Bambis )skinny too ?

The Pacers and Globetrotters were of the wider variety. The Bubbles were of the same width as the early Bambis but that gene pool is even more restrictive as Airstream made less than 100 of them during the models lifetime. The Bubbles were not self contained. They generally didn't have any bathroom facilities at all. It is hard to be too definitive when it comes to early Airstreams, in those days they were mostly handbuilt and there are all kinds of non-catalogued variations.

After 65', the narrowest Airstreams exceed your limitations. The 1963-1964 Bambi II still is nrrow enough as I noted earlier.
