Saw an interesting 58 model last night.

My next door neighbors had company up from Texas last night.
And guess what? Yes they brought their vintage AS along.
So of course I had to go see them and their trailer.
It was a real nice old rig.
A 1958 'Custom' 28 footer.
Their old neighbor (83) had used it as a hunting shack for many years But now it just sat there unused so they asked the old guy if they could buy it. He thought about it for a few minutes and then said they could just HAVE the old thing!
He told them it had been custom built for Walley Byam's Secratary.
Now I'm still a newbie when it comes to knowing all the layouts they made for these things but what surprised me was the Front Galley.
It also had the door that swings to the front and 2 Jalosey windows on the curbside.
The skin had a couple of the usual blemishes but it was over all, in exceptional condition.
Some of the cabinets had begun to delaminate so he made several reapirs to them out of pine plywood.
The cabinet doors under the sink are original.
As is the sink and counter top.
They were just regular folks who came upon an old trailer and decieded to fix it up.
They are not at all internet savy and had no idea of the Vast resources to be found on the World Wide Web.
They were both tickled to learn that they might have a rare and collectable trailer.
And she said "Maybe that's why people kept waving and giving us funny looks as we were on the road. I thought everybody figured we were just hicks pulling this old thing".
It was a treat to see it.
My digital camera is down at the moment so I borrowed a friends to get some photos of it. But I forgot to set the size of the pictures to a decent downloadable size.
I did do some cropping though and uploaded 3 of them to my little storage site.

I have several more I could email if someone wanted to see them.
But they are huge! Like 600kb so you'd probably want to have broadband if you wished to see them.

Hmmm, I wonder...

In the photo below (copied from HERE ) the trailer Wally is pulling appears to have a suicide door and 2 jalousy windows on the curbside. If so, that would add credence to the claim that the trailer you saw may indeed have been custom built for Wally's secretary.
This photo was taken in France so very unlikely that it would be the same trailer.

Airstream's Secretary

"Wally's" secretary is actually his company's [Airstream's] secretary who is also Wally's cousin, Helen Byam Schwamborn. Her WBCCI number "2" is visible on other exterior photos of this 1958 Custom trailer. Very cool!

WOW that would be one to have. It also settle the argument of galley in the front. I like the look of the galley in that location. Looks like some of the cabinet is missing or that is where the original reefer went.

One thing I noticed is it actually appears to be a 59 model (may have been manufactured in 58). Those style windows first appeared on 59's. 58's had the stamped window frames with mutton bars that the regulator rode on. Course it being WB's secratary it may have had a little special treatment.

Neat little peice of history. Hopefully your talking to them will make them understand "Airstreaming" and why those folks wave. Even more important understand that they have a very rare coach and worth preserving.
